I'm so glad you've made that decision. Rescue is a great route, and a good shelter (like Dogs Trust or Assisi) will match people and dogs well - they want it to work out just as much as the families adopting dogs do! Thank you for being open to the things people said in this thread - unfortunately sometimes people just go "ah but I just want one anyway 'cause they're cute" - and everyone who's ever been involved in rescue sighs and knows *exactly* where that's going - so thank you for being open to new information and new ideas, and for making the decision to look at rescue animals instead :T0

Ah you guys are making me broody, I'd love to get my wee doggy a new brother or sister, but unfortunately don't have the time or room for another one. This wee woman keeps my hands full!!
Those poor wee abandonded doggies, how anyone could be bad to a dog is beyond me. I prefer them to humans :rotfl:
Good luck with the doghunting, and don't give up, I went round dog homes for months before I found my perfect girl and I'm so glad I waited for her.0 -

Can I just make everyone aware, dogs trust DO NOT destroy any healthy dog. They do their best to get every dog a home and if they can't rehome an older dog or a dog who has problems, then the chances are that the dog will become a sponsor doggie.
Quote from the Dogs Trust website:Rehoming
The health and happiness of every dog is at the heart of all our efforts and we try to find each and every dog in our care a loving home for life. We never destroy a healthy dog.0 -
Arkonite, I totally agree with Dogs Trust's principles and it makes me so angry that dogs get killed because there aren't enough humans with hearts to go around. The figure quoted by Assisi would be even worse if it weren't for Dogs Trust and other sanctuaries with similar no kill policies. I know the bloke who previously ran the pound for Down District Council. He hated that job with a passion because of the numbers of healthy dogs he had to kill - he had no alternative, the Dogs Trust and similar have a limit to their capacity and there was nothing else he could do, especially given the numbers. He gave up his contract because of this element of it. When I first arrived back in NI after a long time away in mainland UK I was shocked by the numbers of stray dogs wandering around. I see at least one every single day I go into Newry. His advice to me was to NOT pick up stray dogs and definitely do not hand them into the pound - their chances are better as a stray. Going into a pound is almost certainly a death sentence. This bloke also expressed anger and frustration at the numbers of healthy but elderly dogs that came his way and weren't claimed back. It was, in his opinion, because the older dogs were put out just to be replaced by a young puppy. Other owners would go on holiday and put their dog out on the street, then show up at his premises to reclaim it on their return. It was apparently cheaper than putting the dog in a proper boarding kennel, and more reliable than getting a friend or neighbour to look after the animal while they were away. He could actually name a number of people who did that more than once! Most people are responsible dog owners, but an awful lot aren't.
Sorry...that was one almight rant! More :T:T:T to Mar.cresham for going the rescue route to finding a dog for his mum.0
