Oh I would love to have a little doggy! I would say stay away from so-called pure bred puppies. So many of them come from the south of Ireland, and are from puppy farms and are genetically unhealthy. No doubt you'll have looked in the papers - see how many different breeds have the same contact telephone number. They might be highly competent and responsible breeders, but I suspect not.
Assisi in north Down has some dogs which just might fit the bill:

I'd also suggest that you involve your mum in selecting the dog/puppy, after all she is the one who will be with it, feeding it and looking after it. She might get smitten by some poor doggy soul that you would otherwise have overlooked. I know you want to surprise your mum, but maybe you could surprise her with a trip to USPCA in Carryduff or some other shelter rather than with some animal she wasn't expecting to have to take in.0 -

Dogs Trust and various other rescue centres in NI are a good idea though

:rotfl: I'm going to break the internet at this rate!
I want to rescue a little sibling for Poppy but OH is refusing, he's the one who has to do all the walking and poop cleaning so he has to be on board with it.... unfortunately  I think my 16yr old cat is bunging him a backhander though, he has enough to put up with without another disgusting dog coming into his houseThe stupid things you do, you regret... if you have any sense, and if you don't regret them, maybe you're stupid. - Katharine Hepburn0 -
Thank you all so much for all the help. After some digging round I do now feel taking a dog in that needs a new home would be a better way to go (god there some lovely ones on them sites) will look at maybe taking mum for a we drive without telling her where we are going.

Here's the link for Dogs trust if you want it:
Dogs Trust
My boy is from dogs trust 4 years ago, I have to admit they are very helpful and we were able to go back to them to get doggy training classes a few months later. If you have any problem at all, they are so quick to help. To get a dog from Dogs Trust cost me £60, this is to cover vet fees and future neutering. You are also subject to a home check to ensure that you have enough space etc. I really can't recommend them enough!!
This is Bruno by the way0 -

Both our dogs are rescue dogs, we love them to bits, and i think they feel the same way!! We are just so glad that we saved them from a probable death sentence and they have a full and active life. They go away on caravanning holidays with us. The girls have fully integrated with our 3 cats - i thing i never thought would happen!!
How do you add pics ... would love to show them off!

Ahhh we have you converted:D:D:D:D
I really think you're doing the right thing by going to Dogs' Trust or another sanctuary. Look at this quote from Assisi's website:4000 Dogs Destroyed in Northern IrelandEach year 4000 unwanted dogs placed in local dog pounds are destroyed. To save some of these dogs from death row, Assisi launched the CHANCE OF A LIFETIME initiative in November 2003.
This represents 40% of the total for the whole of the United Kingdom.
OK, you probably don't need any more arm twisting...your mum might be a bit shocked at the above statistic and understand better why you are thinking of a rescue dog (or puppy...puppy season is just starting).
Have a lovely time out looking at dogs.0
