Hit and Run, Car Insurance Claim...

Hi

I'm looking for some useful information please.

Yesterday, I was at the Supermarket and a motorbike came right through the giveway and hit my car on the drivers side then bounced off my windscreen.

I didn't realise what was happening to start with. There was a handbag on the floor, This guy got up and went to drive off, I grabbed him and tried to stop him because he wreaked my car, Then let go of him when he tried to kick me. The penny dropped when a woman started running to me shouting he's a thief.

He basically was trying to get away because he had robbed this lady's bag.

So now, I am the victim here and after discussions with my insurance company, they just don't get it.

It looks like they will write my car off, A total joke. It has damage to the wing, bumper and indicator and some of the paint and a cracked windscreen. It's very lucky considering. I have had 2 people look today who have both said, it is just cosmetic damage not mechanical. My main gripe is that they will not provide me with a courtesy car until they decide if they will fix it or not.

It is a great car, never had trouble, low miles and I know if I get book value then I will be out of pocket. The insurance company have no sympathy for me at all. I am planning a wedding, need to travel to Scotland to finalise plans this week and need to be on call for work and they are not interested because they have no other party to claim against. I am so mad.

The police suggested the motor insurance bureau but it takes ages and about £500 excess before you start.

How come there is not more help for people like me? I have done nothing wrong yet I am inconvenienced, out of pocket and knocking my head against a brick wall.

Any suggestions welcome

Thanks

Did you or anyone get the registration number?
  • If you want all the pretty extras pay for them.

Your insurers have done nothing wrong. Yet.
  • Erm, I'm not sure I like your tone. "Pretty extras"?? I pay my insurance like everyone, I don't really think your comment is helpful, it just implies that I'm a moaner. You have no idea what I pay for in my insurance policy.

I'm after information and advice from someone who maybe has had a similar experience. I've been banging my head off a brick wall for 2 days because this guy that hit me can't be traced because he did a runner after a crime. I got his reg but it's not registered.

So really thanks but no thanks for your comment above, I'm already feeling bad enough with cuts and bruises, headaches and stress, Comments like yours i can do without. I hope you never have the misfortune to go through a similar experience.

Maybe I should have been more specific at the end of my post when I said any suggestions welcome.

    carolissosmiley,

ignore him, he only ever posts with negative comments. I have never ever read a decent friendly constructive post from him at all. He is one of lifes losers.

Unfortunately, not only have you been the victim of a hit and run, but also the victim of "unnecessary LinasPilibaitisisbatman post".

On a sensible note, did you get the other ladys details regarding the accident or did she not see it?

I know you are going to be out of pocket, but how much are repairs likely to cost? What is your excess? What about not claiming on your insurance and just getting the repairs done yourself? You have complied and informed your insurance company of the incident.

I am sure some sensible insurance wise person will post soon and maybe help you out.

Good luck, and post with any updates
  • Thank you so much for your response. As we speak I have just got off the phone to the insurance company and have decided to do just that. I have cancelled the claim and I am now doing the repairs myself because they wanted to write it off and I don't want the hassle of going and buying a new car for the little money they offered me.

I think sometimes in life there are just some things which are unfair and that's just the way it is. I believe what goes around comes around and I hope that this petty thief or whatever he is gets what's coming to him one way or another.

Thanks again for your respons, Glad I wasn't the only one who thought LinasPilibaitisisbatman's post was rude and unhelpful! x

Don't forget you will still need to mention the incident when you next insure. The accident will be recorded on your record even though you aren't claiming.

I had a hit and run incident when my car was parked. It wasn't nice losing NCB and having to sort the mess out, but that's what insurance is for.

MIB won't payout for damage to the vehicle if you are fully comp.
  • ok, I didn't know that. Thank you.

If someone got the registration number it could be possible to claim off the motorcycle insurer

Even if the bike is identified, if the rider is unidentified the bike's insurer won't be liable and the MIB will be the only potential route to take.
