The guy has explained they take all the old stuff away, make sure any rotting woodwork underneath is made good, assures me it's a quality job (I know, he would say that, wouldn't he ?)
Sounds like they might be overboarding it, which means putting thinner upvc over the top of the old wooden fascias which are left in place.
If that is the case and the other quotes are for removing all the old wood then the 2 prices can't really be compared.0 -
I've been to look, work looks good up the road, altho owners aren't in.
The house next door to the current one has been done too.

Get him to put all that in a written quote, together with quantities of materials, number of hours labour and cost per hour. If he won't, ask yourself why.
Check that the quantity of materials looks about right and check the cost of them (there are plenty of websites that will show them). £15 an hour is a reasonable rule of thumb.easy wrote:My hubby is in client meetings all day, so I need to decide.
No you don't. If you sign a contract at home you must be given a 7 day cooling off period. Don't let them start work before then, obviously. I had a conversation with Trading Standards today which confirmed this.0 -
maybe that financial director was really the same sales guy who needed the sale and got the hump at the ed when he thought you wouldnt go through with it. I remember our first house and it needed new windows, green on life and this sales guy turned upgave us all th epatter told us he had reduced it by so much and said if i gave him £100 cheque made payable to him he could reduce it a xtra few hundred. Should ahve reported him really, the sad thing is the fitters that did the windows were a dad and son team and did a really nice job. Never been back to that company in all the other houses we have owned. The double glazing salesmen have a really bad rep and with your experience you can see why.Listen to what people say, but watch what people what people do!!0

No markie, they are deffo NOT overboarding, I already know about that practise, and won't have that done at any price.
I made the decision, and they went ahead today. They have taken all old boarding down, and tidied it all away. They have shown my husband that some of the beam ends have some rotten wood (took him up to see), and will repair those. They also pointed out that the felt was damaged at the edges (we knew birds had been nesting under there for 2 or three years), so they have given us the option of paying a couple of hundred more to have those edges recovered (just as ALAN M predicted), we have decided to accept that option.
Since they arrived these lads have worked none stop. They are polite, efficient, and eager to explain how they are doing the job. Neither my husband nor I feel we are being ripped off in any way.I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say.0 -
Measured, told us list price would be £7500
Then said he was authorised to give us discount...so price dropped to £4100.
Then said would we choose them to do the job if he quoted £2495Neither my husband nor I feel we are being ripped off in any way.
So originally asking 3 times what you eventually paid wasn't trying to rip you off?0 -

Altarf, do keep up....
The company we are paying to do the job is a different one, NOT the guys who gave the original stupid quote !I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say.0
