Dining in Bergen, Norway?

Hello,
Does anyone kindly have tips for eating (and DRINKING) out in this city?
We hear Norway can be horrendously expensive so would very much appreciate any advice or experiences.
Traveling end of May.
Kind regards.

I can confirm that it is expensive;
If you are self catering, the fish market (on the Bryggan - you can't miss it) has the most amazing looking fish (& in the summer fruit)
We were on a cruises when we visited, so no need to eat out

The food is expensive although not horrendous it is the drink that bumps up the bill.A glass of wine or beer is £5travelover0

Haven't been to Bergen but Norway is expensive especially drinking with meals. Recommend you take your own alcoholic drinks. Supermarkets we found were not that much more than UK.
Lonely planet recommends
Cafe Opera dishes nkr60-120
Lido mains around nkr105
Pasta Sentral pasta nkr60 pizzas nkr80 desserts nkr 30-40
Mr Bean coffee shop (opens noon) coffee from nkr25
If you want more detail PM me and I'll send you a copy of the guide page.0 -
defiantely do the fish market. You can walk around for hours and get a decent meal in bits from here and there.
Quite an experience, even if you're not eating!!0 -
I did an overnight stop there a couple of years ago and crickey was it expensive.
Sports Bar at the top of the high street worked out cheap for beer especially during happy hour
Made a mistake of needing food after the night out and walked back to a burger bar we had passed on the way back to the hotel, ordered 2 burgers and went back to the hotel, woke up in the morning to find i only ate half of one and worked out it cost me £15 for 2 burgers (oh how alcohol affects judgement lol) but did have a cracking time at least.

As others have said, it's the beer that cripples things rather than the food. There's no shortage of reasonably priced places. Seem to remember that we found a very good italian place along from Bryggen. I'm not sure about Bergen, but in other places in Norway it can pay to go to a place offering a buffet (typically £20-25) and eat enough to last you a few days.
I'd differ from the earlier poster who said beer was reasonably priced in supermarkets. I've always found that to be the case in Sweden (worked there for a while), but it wasn't the case in Norway when I holidayed there....can of beer was £2.50 in the supermarket! I made do because I unwittingly broke the law - knew it would be expensive so bought a slab of beer on the boat to drink while there - only found out afterwards that the duty free limit is about 4 cans! NB their "can recycling" machines are pretty clever as well - they give you money back on the can, but are clever enough to spot an English can and spit it out again....pity given the deposit returned is actually greater than the cost of a (full) can of lager in the UK.I really must stop loafing and get back to work...0 -
If you want to buy your own alcohol, you can buy beer in "some" supermarkets - not all sell beer, watch out for alcohol free beer!
For spirits or wine, you need the Vin Monopol, basically the state run off license. Ask the locals where it is. Alcohol is expensive, the locals tend to stay at home and drink home made hooch till late in the vening before going out.
Piano Bar down at the harbour is a good place, anywhere down by the harbour.0 -
We stayed overnight at a student hostel on the outskirts of Bergen and the meals there were relatively cheap compared to the £20 you would pay at the waters Edge

As for supermarket, I remember laughing at a guy who was paying lots for beer, and seeing him drunk later, and thinking we could have 4 good nights out for the price they'd paid for one......0
