GoDaddy (Domain Suppliers) Overchargin

I'm a website designer, so I need to own my own domains and purchase domains on behalf of my clients. To do this, I use the service GoDaddy, a domain-sellcing giant, that operates internationally.

A few days back, I had to buy a domain for a client, which cost me £13.61 for two years, I checked to see if the money went through today, and GoDaddy have taken £15.50 out of my account instead, so I cross-checked all invoices and receipts, and each time it said Total: £13.61! Not even once was the fee of £15.50 mentioned. Anyway, I went through all of my bank statements, cross-checking invoices and receipts from GoDaddy, and it appears that I've been charged extra for every single domain that I've ever bought from GoDaddy.

I've contacted the company requesting a refund, but I'm not sure what my rights are, and whether I should take this further. I'm going to have to contact all of my clients, and apologise on behalf of GoDaddy, because many of my clients have purchased their own domain from GoDaddy, rather than myself being in control of it... So that's going to be a hassle.

I just don't know what to do about it, whether or not to take it to a higher party, and demand some legal action against the company, who may very well be over-charging people every single day, and if that's the case, they could be making hundreds of thousands of pounds illegally.

Could easily be VAT? or currency conversion differences - I assume they charge in US$ or € maybe?

Hi Tehone, thanks for the reply.

The VAT is included in the original price.

Besides, the VAT would be £15.60

Might want to take the link out of your sig, advertising isn't allowed here. As before, currency differences might be the root cause.

Two years sounds like a .co.uk in which case you are paying way over the odds anyway - https://www.123-reg.co.uk/ with full DNS control so you can point to your own server. There are probably even cheaper ones around but I stuck with 123 after finding many others only offered redirection.

Godaddy are a pretty bad registrar. Watch them drag their heels if you ever try to transfer the domains away to somewhere cheaper.

I doubt the error was theirs though, since it's all automatic. It'll be your bank's currency conversion charge, most likely.

I use 1and1 for domains, but then their hosting costs are too steep. Perhaps if I ever need anything more reliable/robust I'll use them, but not yet.

I have my own reseller hosting, so it's not the hosting that's the problem. The GoDaddy service is pretty superb, very simple nameserver changes and domain management. The only thing that is keeping me from doing a transfer is the £10 charge for each domain, then the charge on the other end for transferring them to another company.

never had .co.uk with godaddy, but the .org/.tv i had incurred no fees for transferring out. Any good registrar won't charge for transferring to them either, only adding renewal fees which will extend the life of the domain, and which you'd be paying anyway.

You're still advertising in your sig, which is against the rules as you've been told. People are less likely to help if you keep taking the !!!!.

GoDaddy doesn't even have the option to transfer the .co.uk, although it would appear that the domains simply go straight to my nominet account. It's peculiar, I have three .co.uk domains in total associated with myself, two of which have gone to my nominet account, the third is yet to appear on it, but I'm positive that it has.

Sorry about the advertising in my signature, I mis-read the previous posts!! I've removed it now.

Odd that they don't seem to let you transfer .co.uk.

Most of my domains are now with namecheap, good customer service and good prices.
