Abbey change in the way online system shows your balances

Hi
Just wondered if anyone else had experienced the same problems I have with Abbey recently.
I check my bank account most days online to view my statement, balance etc especially near pay day to check I am in credit and nothing has come out unexpectedly. It now is not showing you any items that would take your overdrawn on the online statement. This is only a recent thing. Last week I checked my online statement as usual everthing was Ok I was in credit, various items had come out on that particular day. Next day when I checked online it then showed that for the previous day an extra DD had come out and it had been returned due to not enough money being in. I couldn't believe it as the previous day I had checked and everything was Ok or else I could have transferred some money in to cover it. I rang Abbey up and when I asked why that item hadn't shown up the previous day, she told me that they now have two processing times one at 6am in the morning an another at 4pm.But is seems strange that only the items that would take you over are not shown (they always used to do)
This has happened to me again today exactly the same scenario, a returned item from yesterday (that didn't show up yesterday!) This has never happened to items that are paid.

payments online are available 24 hours a day....
don't see why DDs coming out at 4pm would be a problem... although slightly weird.

Hi
Now it seems I will never have a chance to stop myself incurring extra charges if this happens.

Not that difficult to set up a spreadsheet budget model where you can plug in known DDs, SOs, cheques issued, anticipated salary credits, etc. Works for me.
Also the Abbey T&Cs will state that you must have sufficient funds in your account to cover any payments to be made on the following day, so can't see how you have a leg to stand on really.Ethical moneysaver0 -

Exactly this.
This isn't any sort of maneuver to rack up more charges; it's simply a means to control their processing. The contract you made with them by opening the account requires you to have sufficient funds available on the day before the Direct Debit is paid. Even if the money goes in the morning and you then pay in cash later that day, you're still in breach.
Learning how to budget effectively would remove these issues, as well as moving your Direct Debits, where possible, to the same date. What would William Shatner do?0 -
Do you lot work in banking! You sound just like my bank. Did'nt expect to be patronised (abbeys terms and conditions quoted at me!) and made to feel inferior to these people. It must be wonderful to be so organised with your money and never incur charges etc. I Know that I should make sure I have enough money in my account to pay DD,s etc, but on a couple of occasions I was caught out with new DD setups. I only posted to ask if anyone else had noticed the same thing.
I was just pointing out that Abbey has changed the way that you can see what has come out of your account on a particular day, where once online it would show you everthing that had come out on that day, even items that would take you overdrawn, thus showing you an overdrawn balance, now it doesn't appear to show you any items that may take you overdrawn, you always appear to be in credit on that particualar day, however the next day it shows you extra items from the previous day that it did not originally show you when you checked on that previous day).
I am trying to be better organised with money, but we all can get caught out, that is why I check daily that my account is oK. (Like Im sure a lot of people do)
I know that this site is against unfair overdraft fees etc so Im sure that I am certainly not the only one who happens to go overdrawn sometimes, and it is not always nice for the obvious to be pointed out to you! I know I should always make sure enough money is in my account (In an ideal world!!)
I was just wondering if anyone else had notice the change in how Abbey now shows you your transactions online.
Sorry if my original post wasn't clear. I am new to this!! Please be kind.0 -
OMG! Chill, please. I didn't think anything about what anyone said was patronising at all. They're just trying to help!0

Is it really that difficult to, at least, keep a note of what DD's you have each month, and perhaps a pocket diary where you note what you've spent on your debit card?Conjugating the verb 'to be":

adearn I'm sure no-one meant to make you feel that way in the slightest.
You say you wanted to see if anyone else had experienced this change with Abbey and that you was pointing out the change. Unfortunately your post didn't say that, your post came across as angry that they have changed their policy (even though they have not breached their terms and conditions) and it appeared that you wanted to moan.
Please do continue to post don't let these things upset you. It is an open forum after all. Maybe next time you post you could structure it a bit better. So if you are telling people of a change your post reflects that. If you are asking if anyone has noticed a slight change it reflects that and if you want to vent about a change that has caught you off guard then do so and try not to get upset.0 -
"Is it really that difficult "...
for the banks to set up a system where we could nominate one of our other savings accounts to be used as a 'source' in such situations.
Technically not I think, but no doubt would hurt their profit margins, but if they were trying to offer customers a service to manage money better, you might think it would be an option
"(even though they have not breached their terms and conditions)" - just like MP's expenses then0 -
But why should they have to? Wouldn't it be much more straightforward for customers to keep a 'float' in their account, whether it is cash or an authorised overdraft that they haven't used, so that a direct debit they've overlooked won't cause them to incur charges?0

Isn't that just a complicated version of an authorised overdraft? :rolleyes:Conjugating the verb 'to be":
