we are about to give notice on our rental (originally signed up for 6 months and its 18months on) the 2 bed bungalow were in will need a new lick on paint on he walls, even the radiators are flaking off. Cream carpets thoughtout!!! does make me think that the LL will try to take some money off us for replacing the carpets and repainting the walls and radiators.
Listen to what people say, but watch what people what people do!!

back when i was in a flat at uni my friend touched up our walls with tippex- which worked quite well - although i think it helped the wallpaper was textured and needs to be white paint.
We had a rented house where we noticed the night before leaving that we had damaged the plaster where a chair had been tipped back. We filled the dent with toothpaste. Perfect repair - didn't need to paint it with Tippex!.
  • There seem to be some real tyrant landlords out there. I guess all landlords' expectations are different.

My tenants a family of 4, moved out last week after being there for 22 months. Yesterday I was at the property (my former home) to repaint all the walls as I'd expect wear and tear, but it was worse than I anticipated, however, in all honesty I'd have been horrified if they'd tried to redecorate themselves (bit of a perfectionist!)

The cutting in was done by me and my 15 year old nephew, and a friend rollered the paint on. I went for the same colours as before so only one coat was needed. Two colours had been discontinued, but as they were by Dulux I could get those remixed.

We devised an action plan and we'd done a lounge, bathroom and 3 bedrooms in 6 hours - including coffeebreaks and lunch - I was amazed so much could be done. I just wiped down the skirting boards and coving (which looked like coca cola had been sprayed on it) with sugar soap - good as new - fantastic stuff.

We also took down the picture hooks and filled them in.

Some skirting boards are marked, so I plan on sanding down the gloss paint and painting with satinwood - easier to paint on than gloss and doesn't go yellow.

I tried to get away not painting the enclosed staircase walls - and managed this by using an eraser and sugar soap. There's a dado rail going up the staircase and bits had been chipped, probably by the removal of furniture, so I just painted over this.

I'm doing the kitchen walls next week which were originally done in Crown's kitchen/bathroom range but is now discontinued, so I've to choose another which will take a couple of coats (it's a kitchen which needs a strong colour - neutrals just don't work - and I did try!)

My only disappointments were where the tenants had tried to fix things themselves and attempt DIY when I'd rather they'd have told me about any problems and I'd have sorted them, and since giving me notice they'd not done the garden.

My tenants had the carpets cleaned before they left which I hadn't expected them to do and they'd wiped down all inside the kitchen cupboards and left the bathroom clean (no grimy plugholes!) which I really appreciated.

I'm hoping to sell the house (but that's another story!), but from my experience I'd advise anyone to use a standard colour (my particular favourite is Gardenia) throughout or if going for colour, go for Dulux as if it gets discontinued they can till remix, then only one coat is needed, or buy an extra tin.

Good luck to all hoping to get their deposits returned in full. I'm sure for your next property you'll ask exactly what the landlord's definition is on wear and tear.
