You could use Avira AntiVir or Avast Home Edition, both of which are free and better than Norton Anti-virus.0

Totally agree, dump Norton, and go with the free software.0
-
and to remove norton properly, uninstall it from the control panel then download and run the norton removal tool0

AVG Free is a perfectly good anti-virus software that also doesn't block your computer's memory with un-necessary tasks every five minutes
I must check out those other free ones sometime!

Couldn't agree more. I work in IT and in my opinion norton is a dog.
Sure it does a good job at stopping viruses but is bloaty and will really slow down a machine.0 -

AVG in rubbish, many a time has it let Viruses on to PC's and has gone downhill in it's latest incarnation.
Avira and Avast are better. I like Avira as it has excellent detection rates and is very lite on resources.
Norton 2009 has been a significant improvement over the garbage they put out in the past few years. It seems to be getting good reviews all round and is supposed to be quite lite on resources.0 -

AVG isn't as good as it was a few years ago, I'd put Avira first, then Avast with AVG in third - but I wouldn't use it out of choice. I stopped using AVG ages ago, and wouldn't go back, it's much more inefficient compared with Avira, and doesn't detect as many viruses in comparative tests.0 -
It's invariably cheaper to buy Symantec products 'new' rather than renew your sub. That's a second reason for not using Norton. The first is-it's carp.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Another vote here for ditching Norton and replacing it with Avira or Avast.
I did exactly that about four years ago (initially with AVG, which I've since replaced with Avast) and haven't looked back since.0 -
Ditch Norton and forget about AVG - it's gone down the pan. Comodo is another option to those above.0
