Therefore does anybody know if I will have any problems paying this cheque (in both names) into my single named account ?

    Yes, you will have problems.

A cheque in joint names can only go into an account that is held in the joint names of both the people named on the cheque.

A cheque in a single name can go into any account (joint or single), provided that the payee of the cheque is named on the account.
  • Morning Folks - thought I'd do a quick update :)

Sent an letter to Abbey head office, printed out the T's & C's and highlighted the bit that says either party can close the account. Please send a cheque in joint names for the whole sixteen pence yadda yadda yadda

OMG! not only closed but here have a cheque - not in joint names. - Either person can take remaining monies out and either person can close the account!! WOOHOOOO

Now very peed off with the branch who were "Unable to find" the terms and conditions.
We missed one old savings account - I'm tempted to go into the brach armed with the T's & C's just to make a point.
Probably just write a letter for a quiet life - but then again mebbe they need to be told so people like the lady in her example with a 15 year old account with her ex husband dont need to worry about it any more!

Anyhoo alls well that ends well with the bank accounts :D Now if we can just get this divorce sorted, must be a cheep way of getting this through the courts :D
