When there is a dispute on the account, and following verbal/written request from either account holder, take the following action in order to immediately restrict access to the account and issue a new ‘all signatures’ chequebook.
1. Cancel all cards on the account.
This will automatically cancel existing e-banking and telephone banking facilities too.
2. Put a stop on all current chequebooks.
This will make all current cheques in the customer’s possession invalid. If they present a cheque which is guaranteed this will be honoured.
3. Change the account code to “All Signatures Required” on the system
4. Order both customers a new chequebook.
These chequebooks will take seven days to arrive and will require signatures from both parties. The customers will not receive new cards.
5. Use the attached letter template on the intranet to send to both parties/the other party as appropriate to confirm the action. If the customers are now living at separate addresses please follow the process listed in section 16 (Record Changes - Special Mailing) of the Banking Product Admin manual. Please follow the latest change of address process.
6. If the process is verbal, please record the detail in an “Alert” in the Customer Portal.
This process will not affect existing Direct Debits, Standing Orders and Bill Payments set up on the account. However, any new Direct Debits, Standing Orders and Bill Payments will need permission from both parties.
Customers can still withdraw cash using the chequebook. Both parties will need to be present to sign the cheque and they will both need one piece of transactional Identification. For cash withdrawals greater than £500 the identification required is listed on the Intranet through the following path Branch Employee Portal>Policies>Company Procedures>Branch control>Transactional Identification. This information will also be represented in the Banking Product Administration manual and the Banking and Bookkeeping manual in the Bookstore.0 -

6 Joint Accounts
6.1 Liability for Joint Accounts
6.1.1 Two people (but not more) may have a current account in joint names (a “joint account”). If you apply for a Joint Account:
(i) both you and your Joint Account holder will be liable (individually and together) for any money due to us; and
(ii) where any cards or cheque books are issued on the Joint Account or you access the Joint Account via telephone, internet or other remote access channel (see Condition 7) each of you will be authorised to operate the Joint Account on your own, without the need for us to obtain the other’s approval to any instructions or requests we receive from either of you, including to close the Joint Account.0 -

Hi, I have a joint account with my ex we have been apart for nearly 3 years now and ever since I have been desperately trying to resolve this issue.
Basically, I have no contact with my ex, it ended very badly, with him going to prison for year and half. I have no desire to speak to him, i don't even know where he is now living and it is very important he does not know my address etc.
The account is with HSBC and they will not close it unless both of us sign. I have told them the situation with no resolution, I know he has not been paying his loan and credit card whilst in prison so is he dragging me down with him?
Please advise me on how to get this account closed i will do anything, as i would love him out of my life for good.
Thanks very much0 -
Are those T's and C's on the web somewhere???

There is no debt on the account, but they still refuse to close it without us both being there. I would have said this is 'special circumstances' Thanks xx0

Found it
you're a blumin STAR!
Question is, do I go in there an wave it under their noses or do I write a nice letter with a full print out of the T's & C's with the relevant section highlighted?"I know that Prince Charming doesn’t come save me, we save each other and fight back to back against all comers that’s what marriage is to me. Nothing passive, no being carried off on a white steed, give me my own damn horse and lets ride into the sunset side by side." - Laurell K. Hamilton.0 -
Either... write in probably the best. keep it simple, just say the account is to be closed as it isnt used.
make sure there is no outstanding balance first and you must use the address held on file as corespondance
either positive or negative outstanding balance? the account is in credit by pence
thanks for helping out guys
I've just been running up against a brick wall in the Abbey branch!!! "I know that Prince Charming doesn’t come save me, we save each other and fight back to back against all comers that’s what marriage is to me. Not sure if this the right place or not ? Feel free to move if need be ?.
One quick question if I may. I used to have a joint account with my ex and Shabby. I seem to remember Shabby removed her from the account with no questions asked when we split up 5 years ago. (Although I did do this in branch and I do recall being seen by a very young Customer service girl who mayve not known what she was doing)
I have successfully reclaimed some charges from Abbey but Abbey are insistant on making the cheque payable to both our names as this was what the account was at the time of the charges.
Therefore does anybody know if I will have any problems paying this cheque (in both names) into my single named account ?
Having gone through the wrangle trying to extract these fees from Abbey I dont want to flounder now and not be able to bank my endeavours. Any ideas ?If you see a penny, pick it up, all day long you'll have good luck !!!!!!
