silly question - cans of drink on an airplane

is it ok to take cans of soft drink on an airplane?

should they be in cabin luggage or is it ok to put them in suitcase luggage?

i am going to rome soon and i want to take a small bottle of drink plus some mixers- to surprise my wife with and wondered about the safety aspect of taking cans of soft drink onto a plane
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)

I think that's a very valid question - well done for posting it.

I've often wondered about cans and aeroplanes - will they explode

i know there is a logic regarding aerosol cans... ie they must be in the cargo hold due to it not being pressurised.

but then cans of drink are served on the plane........

Aerosols must be transported in hand luggage.

As for cans/drinks on the plane, don't let the steward/esses see you as that's where they make their money !
Just for one moment, thought I'd found my way.

yes cans are ok, done it many times before,
  • I remember a few years ago when i was on a flight with my daughter who was 18mths old at the time and was sitting on my lap. the flight attendant served us with cans of coke. i held the can out in the aisle when i opened it so i didn't spill any on my daughter. well, the can exploded when i pulled the ring pull. it soaked about half a dozen people who were unfortunate enough to be sitting nearby. i aplogised profusely. the second can, i decided to keep close while i opened it. the same thing happened again, only this time my poor daughter was covered from head to toe in sticky coke. she was spluttering so much- she looked like she was drowning. at least they weren't cans that i had taken in my hand luggage. anyway, just be careful when you open them.
    stay lucky!
    Steve.

Yes you can take fizzy drinks cans on planes. I think the exploding on opening is more about being shaken in your bags on your way to the plane. Plane cabins are pressurised to the equivalent of air pressure at about 10000ft. so cans should be ok even though the difference in pressure is more than at sea level. Personally I wouldn't put drinks cans in my hold luggage because of the way the bags are handled.

If you are nervous take fizzy drinks in plastic bottles so the pressure can be released slowly.
