is it possible to hook up a hard-drive recorder to sky freeview?

Options
i really don't want to pay for sky - i wouldn't get the value from it as i only watch the usual channels anyway (c4, itv etc).

however, i'd really like a hard-drive recorder but as i said don't want to have to pay a regular fee for sky+.

is it really impossible to connect my skydish-skybox to a hard-drive recorder that isn't sky+?

(sorry for all the reallys)

thanks.

You REALLY like that word don't you?!
The only other recording device on the market right now that you can plug into your sky+ feed is a Humax Foxsat HDR. This is an HD Freesat recorder (PVR). I have one and I would highly recommend it. Can be had for £290 (think it's less now) and will plug straight in to the Sky inputs.

Really, if you go to Richer Sounds, you will get one for £279 and if you pay an extra £28 you will get 5 years guarantee, if you don't claim you get your £28 back, how's that?

We have a panasonic DVD recorder with hard drive - simply connect to the scart at the rear of your Freesat sky box - watch on av1 record on av2 - works brilliantly!
    Hope this helps.

Same here, I have a Goodmans HDD/DVD recorder combo. I think it seems that if the machine is a DVD recorder it can take an input from an external source like a Virgin or Sky box.

Yep, even I can do that with my Panasonic HDR. AV2 scart to the box, leave box switched on to correct F/V channel and timer record to AV2 and even record as you watch "catch up" stuff . .
  • Hi, to those who have the HD/DVD recorder box, are you able to view listings and record from the listings or do you have to manually enter the start and end times for each recording? Cheers

You have to enter the start/finish times (just like on on old VCR) and make sure your Sky box is switched on and turned to the channel you want to record. You can't record two programmes when you are out if they are on different channels.

If you need that capability or an EPG, you need a Sky+ box and subscription or a Humax Freesat recorder. There is no other option that I'm aware of.

Just got a Freeview box with 80gb HD recorder for about 60 or 70 quid. Records up to 2 channels at once while watching something else.
Just go to the guide, scroll to the programme I want then press red record button.
Got it from Clearance Bargains at Corby. Superb bit of kit!
