Connecting to internet at work

I have a connection to broadband at home through a router and it works fine, when I connect to the network at work I can't get onto the internet properly.

It is very strange because there is obviously some sort of connection because I can download my e-mails to outlook through the network, but it just never finds webpages in internet explorer.

Any ideas? It is probably something simple as it always is!

Cheers for any help!

Are you sure that you are not actually connecting to the companies intra-net?

I am not sure to tell you the truth - it is a small school network and outlook gets e-mails from lots of web-based accounts so it must be getting through somehow.

It also says it is connecting to whichever website I want, but goes to the generic error screen after a while.

You are probably going through a controlled firewall that blocks some web-sites and monitors every site you attempt to visit ....

I work in a secondary school in their IT department, and I would hazard a guess that the school use a proxy server, whether it's in-house or through their ISP. You may find that it requires authentication from the user - so when you log on in school, your username is passed through and authenticates the school computer against the web request.

However, when on your laptop, because it will be config'd for home, you won't have the internet proxy server for work configured.

If you log in on a work comp, then check the proxy settings (tools, internet options, connections tab, lan settings button), and then input that into the IE settings on your laptop, reconnect to the school network and try again...

If there's nothing under a specific proxy setting in IE, then I'd say that it's a firewall that's blocking you...

As Green.. says, they may well be monitoring internet usage, so don't abuse it!!!

But I NEED to check my fantasy football during RE!

Actually there used to be a few comps in the room before we got a comp suite, so it still has all the points and I want to use it with small groups of children at a time.

Would outlook still be able to get my emails even with a firewall etc?

Thats a bit long winded, if you have one, just ask the network manager who should be able to tell you, if he cant then hes not doing much good is he.

If he tells you - ask what it is and version and also the ports that he has left open - if he won't give you the ports - get the version and we can try the default open ports ..... 'onest

the easiest way to crack a system is to know what system you have to crack .... :T when I was was a lad they used to say "loose lips sink ships " ...... :rotfl:

They will be the ones with the blocked addresses, being watched etc - as a "proxy client" you can use any port/ip to a multi-homed proxy server that controls internet access. Some will be more open then others, techies do fantasy football too...

80 may be open to/from the outside if there are internet servers in a DMZ etc ... but that is another story ... :rotfl: not here to hack systems 'onest :A
