It's fair to pay half the costs for such a long trip, irrespective of other costs. If you don't agree with it then get the train!

Thanks for all the replies, the patronising, ill thought out, condescending ones particularly. It was a simple question to canvass opinion which clearly has shown my thoughts were incorrect.

Sounds fair enough to me. They might be making the journey anyway but I assume that they pick you up. I used to pick someone up. It was not too far out of my way but the driver has the extra responsiblity to made sure they are on time etc. Personally I like me time on the way to work, singing very of tune to the radio and don't want to consider anyone else.

I don't suppose that it increases the fuel by that much. Are you a driver at the moment? The only reason I ask is that I hadn't filled up my car for a few months (lucky for me someone else seemed to) and was surprised how much it was now costing me to fill up the tank.

If you have a car as well could you take it in turns, swapping over each week?

This may not be what you want to hear but I think they are doing you a favour. You have put friend in quotes so I suspect that are not that close. I understand that you do not want to get ripped off but if you quizz the 'friend' they may not take you in future. If I was the driver and not that close I would ask myself if the £200 was worth sharing my car (it is not the same with a passenger). You do not have the hassle of driving or being stuck on a train.

If you are not happy paying £200 it is not fair on the 'friend' as it may cause an atomsphere.

No, I take on board what you're saying and I can see where you're coming from and to a point I agree. For the sake of saving £50 a month it's probably better all round to catch the train.
