Minus Kitchen + No Fridge = Eating Crap

Hello
We're currently reaching the second week of being minus kitchen, there's no worksurfaces, sink, fridge, cooker etc - everything is piled up and in the middle room and we're existing using paper plates/plastic glasses and cutlery.
It's going to be at least another week before we get the kitchen in and eating is proving stupidly expensive. We don't have a fridge or cooker as mentioned above as they died and were collected by the council this weekend.
Unfortunatley any healthy eating at the moment has gone to pot and it's coke/cherryade, microwave cheeseburgers/chicken burgers (Feasters - 79p in Sainsbury's - goooorgeous!) with toast, soup and sandwiches and crisps and fruit filling up the gaps. If I ever see anymore soup again it'll be too soon!
Can anyone suggest anything lasting that doesn't need keeping in the fridge and is more filling? We do have a freezer but it's too hard to get to at the moment - though hopefully it'll change in the next day when the glazers are here.
Thanks guys

Hahaha. Feeling hungry, huh?

I'd make couscous and maybe attempt a curry in the microwave. Use couscous in place of rice - it really is easy to cook. Put it into a container with a lid, add boiling water or stock and put the lid over the top, then either leave for 5 minutes to cook in the heat of the boiling water or stick in the microwave for a couple of minutes.
For the curry, I'd put chopped tomato, Patak's curry paste and stock into a microwaveable bowl and heat in the microwave to make a curry sauce. Stir in cooked, diced chicken. Heat and serve over the couscous.0 -
noodles, pasta and sauce, tinned sausages heated in microwave served in finger rolls= hot dogs that a lot cheaper than single microwave ones.LBM-29/08/07

Thanks everyone, knew I could rely on you

We've just got some jacket spuds in so tea for tonight is sorted with beans.
Being awkward we don't like hot dogs, noodles, those batchelors pasta things, couscous or fish. I wish I liked the pot noodle things too :rotfl: Would be easier!
The curry sounds heavenly though!Homer: Don't you worry about Wikipedia. We'll change it when we get home.

you can cook pasta in the mircowave - just heat a bowl of water until i tboils, then add pasta, then stir, then stick in for a minute, stir again (thi sstops it sticking) and then microwave for as long as the packet says boil for. The idea is to stop i tboiliing over which depends on teh power of you rmicrowave - just keep an eye on it - if it looks about to boil over then reduce teh power a bit but basically boiling pasta in water for a while will cook it. It does not matter whether you use a microwave or a hob to keep teh water boiling.0

Hi,
I was going to suggest cous cous too. I bought some from B&M Bargains today for 29p - Ainsley Harriot Wild Mush Flavour. It's so easy just to put it in a bowl, pour boiling water over and cover it with a plate for 5 mins. I'd have it with some cold sliced chicken/or those packs of roasted med veg you can buy from the freezer section that can be easily microwaved.Looking forward to the future.0 -
when i was having my new kitchen put in we couldn't live without the slow cooker, just throw loads of veg in to make stew or soups,or whole chickens, joints of meat. we also made pasta sauce in it and porridge,, buy the toastie making sleeves from pound shop and make healthy toasties with cheese tuna onions etc.. if you can borrow a grilling machine these a good for meats you could also cook on the bbq outside:) . salads are good also ..try the old style thread will be loads of tips over thereIT'S ALL ABOUT ME!!!:j:money:0

I was going to suggest a slow cooker too, if you haven't got one they are £20 or so. For an easy casserole chuck in chopped chicken, chopped potatoes, onions and whatever veg you have, top up with stock, add herbs and pepper and a squirt of tomato puree. Takes about 8 hours or so. Can't go wrong really.0

Microwave rice sachets are good. Could create a stirfry type thing. Onions, peppers, peas, mushrooms etc plus cooked chicken, add a little oil / butter and water / soy sauce, heat through till cooked enough then add rice and mix up nicely.
Yum, quite fancy the sound of that myself
