tesco...

I bought a chicken thursday before the easter weekend that was dated display untill 14th (today) use by 15th (tomorrow) opened it today to roast it and it smells really foul. So I called tesco as Ive usually recived good customer service and they asked me to bring it down with my reciept...(who keeps reciepts for 4days?,ok I know some will but I dont) The guy at the other side of the phone said he wouldn't refund it unless I had the reciept??? I asked what even though it's clearly from tesco AND is showing as still in date??? his reply was he wouldn't be sure it was from his store lmao!!
How rude!
vent over

  • You opened it up, and although you have the packaging, how do Tesco know that it is their chicken or even if you paid for it unless you show the receipt? Thiefing stuff and taking it back for the cash gives a better return than trying to sell it on.....

However, I must admit that I have taken stuff back to Tesco for return and, when got there, realised that I did not have the receipt as I left it at home - doh! Oddly, this was accepted a couple of times and I still got cashback or an exchange. The latest was an electric toothbrush that stopped working and they gave me an exchange AND cashback as the new replacement was cheaper than the old Tesco electic toothbrush. So hoorah for Tesco on that occasion.

So perhaps it depends upon how nice you are to the staff when you asked if you can exchange it or get a refund. Were you polite? Or were you shouting about the Sale of God act (tee hee)

You do not need a receipt as proof of purchase.

The packaging proves that the chicken is from Tesco & that is adequate.

I'm sure if you take it back they will refund/exchange for you.

Just be polite & explain to customer services the situation & I am sure you will have no problems.

Ok, there is a chance that you are using an old chicken with your tesco chicken packaging but I doubt very much that Tesco are goin to accuse you of that when you go instore. And who in their right mind is seriously going to do that! :rotfl:

Surely that is the whole point? How would you feel if you were selling widgets and somebody calls you up and says:-

"I have some widgets in your bag and they do not widge anymore, I want my money back".

Are you going to refund them?

If its a generic item that is available in lots of places then you would need receipt as proof of purchase.

If the packaging proves where the item was purchased then that is sufficent for 'proof of purchase'. Or if the item is branded (say a top from River Island with a River Island label on) then that counts as proof of purchase.

This is a chicken with Tesco packaging. That is enough. The fact that it is open is irrelevant as the OP needed to open it to find out it was 'rank' - lol

I have home delivery maybe twice a month and I went through a phase of maybe 3 deliveries where the chicken was always rank, smelly and on one occassion actually rotting, all within 2-3 days of BBE or UBD.

I really feel that you ought to name this company who supply you with rotting chicken, perhaps? Sorry, but I am unsure if you meant that you ordered these chickens through Tesco or some other supplier.

I do not think that you have ever had any retail experience have you?

    :D Yes. Thanks for asking.

I appreciate that a chicken is generic but I doubt very much that Tesco are going to argue that point when someone returns with a manky chicken and tesco chicken packaging?

Seriously, a receipt is not the only way of 'proof of purchase'.

Did you use your clubcard for this shop? It keeps a record of things you've bought..so that should be proof enough. If I was you I would call their call centre..they have always been really nice to me. Tesco have very good refund policies, I don't think its reasonable to expect someone to keep a receipt for 4 days for food.

Hope you get your money back!

Forget Tesco. Don't even bother with the place again.

Don't buy ANY meat from a supermarket! That's the simple answer. We got out of the ritual about a year ago and now buy from the same butcher either once a week or a fortnight. The meat keeps that long..

It's only after you move away from supermarket meat that you realise just how bad it's gradually become over the years. They're ripping everyone off blind, and Tesco are one of the worst offenders.

Butcher's meat isn't full of water for one, and it actually tastes like what you think it is. Our budget is £30/fortnight. And we always get a couple of free offcut bones for next door's dog too.
