Its hard to tell what a good deal is on pay and go coz of the differing charges for calls and text.

The cheapest phone I have seen is Nokia 2610 from dialaphone for £9.75 - then you just have to keep topping it up. On that deal T-Mobile charge 10p to 40p depending on which network you are calling.

The value of such a deal depends on your son's usage and whether he will like such a phone.

You would be better off getting a monthly deal - The best one I have seen is phones4u offering a sony phone effectively £90 for the year after redemption but its offering 150 min and 500 text a minute.

I have O2, they seem to be the cheapest, and £10 a month topping up gets me 1500 free txts and 500 minutes free calls to other O2 phones, but proves costly on phoning other services.

Ive had Orange, Cellnet and Vodaphone in the past on PAYG, but I found O2 worked out cheaper for me.

I would recommend a Samsung E250. Cheapest place to buy one is T Mobile direct or Tesco Direct.
They are easy & cheap to unlock with a tiny key. I bought one from HERE

I'd then go with FAMILY MOBILE PAYG who are part of IKEA. Cheap calls & texts and you can keep an eye on what you're spending through their online service.
