My son's Samsung phone screen is ruined by large black blobs. He has looked after it (Christmas present) and on the web there are thousands of similar complaints about Nokia and Samsung. Despite paying for the phone and normal use, their warranties do NOT cover screens, and users all get the blame for poor handling!! What can we do about it?

Those black spots are caused by pixel damage in the screen and colour bleed. This is normally caused by excess pressue being placed on the screen ie crushed. All manufacturers will see this as the same sadly. Your only option is to pay to have it replaced.
