I agree that consistency is important, but I await the government scrapping the agreed 2 year 2.3% per year deal because RPI is 0.9% (whereas CPI is 3.2%). Am I being cynical?

Possibly, but the deal would have to be scraped if a new one is wanted at 10%!
  • The government tends to add headteachers into the mix, despite the fact that they are not part of the NUT.

That would be as silly as including Fred Goodwin's pay when working out the average pay of a cashier!

Yes, with luck common sense will prevail, the NUT has made its usual announcement which will be ignored, and hopefully the government will stick to what it has already agreed with all the other teaching unions (who represent the majority of UK teachers).

Well a lot of RBS greedy bonus grabbers are probably call centre workers on £14k per year who have a contractual 10% bonus.

Wow this thread has moved quickly! A couple of points:

Regarding Ofsted inspections - Ofsted currently have to give 48 hours notice and are in school for 3 days. We have recently been inspected under a 'pilot' observation (not sure when or if this will be rolled out) which was a no notice inspection - they rang up in the morning to let us know they were on the way. Much better IMO (although because we were on the pilot scheme we know it was imminent so were inundated with stuff to do from senior management in the run up!) but I think if it is rolled out it will be much better.

Cover Supervisors are great for short term absence and help to prevent teachers from losing their free time to cover, but there is a real danger of them being used to cover long term absences which is completely unacceptable. Students should be taught by a properly qualified instructor or teacher and there are plenty of unemployed teachers who are desperate for supply work and are unable to get it.

The NUT make these pay claims every year and I think that quite a few teachers are fed up of the ridicule that they are subjecting us to. It makes us seem like a moneygrabbing profession and to be quite honest I think the majority of teachers are not in it for the money - why the hell would you be? You are in it because you want to make a difference to the kids that you teach and because you enjoy the subject that you trained in.
That is the reason why so many teachers work long hours - I could plan a weeks worth of lessons in 2 hours but they would be horribly boring. To think up things that will grab attention, make the subject fun, and then produce the resources that go with them is what takes time. The job expands to fill the time you are willing to give it, and the dedication that you have to it.

This does sound better - when we had Ofsted I made sure that I didn't do anything different because I just don't see the point! It would pick out the unprepared teachers thats for sure!

    I

The quality of national education as measured by GCSE & A-Level grades has grown at a staggering rate

    They should get 20%!

Unfortunately they have been making the exams easier every year and now teachers just teach what is needed for the exams rather then across the subject.

Source is my mum who is a retired teacher and now marks for the exam boards.

I dont blame the teachers for the decline in standards its the goverment and parents. Once you have a disruptive child in your class then the stands fall as the teacher spends more timr trying to control the class then teach. As some parents dont seam to beable to control their kids we are seeing more and more disruptive children with no resepct for teachers and education.

The emotional side of me wants to condemn the NUT demands for a 10% pay rise. But then I think, would it be such a bad thing? I know there is strong evidence that the elasticity of supply for teachers is very sensitive to pay. Surely, a substantial pay increase would attract better quality graduates into the teaching profession, even if a lot of teachers do not deserve it.

That's very generous of you! What is your evidence that 'a lot' of teachers aren't deserving of your beneficence?

Have you also good, empirical evidence of a strong correlation between, say, the level of student degrees and subsequent good performance in the infant/junior classroom?

How about a few less sweeping generalisations on this thread? We could start by re-naming it 'Some teachers demand a 10% pay rise.'

    I totally agree.

Hence the smillie in my 100% sarcastic post. I obviously need to choose another one next time to make it clearer :o

Whenever government sets targets or wants results to advertise to the electorate it distorts the service being offered. Unfortunately proper, rigorous education has never been the priority of this government's education department - as the recent departmental change of name indicates.

We now have the "Department for Children, Schools & Families" - we don't even have education in the title!

It should actually be renamed the "Let's pretend we're all equal while our standards are still up to the international competition so that Labour can get re-elected Department"

Or if you want an alternative "The Ed Balls for next leader of the Labour Party Department"
