I have just booked a hire car in Italy for next week and have found that I cant find neither mine nor my husband's green parts of our driving licences! I have turned the house upside down today:mad:.

Does anyone know if you can apply for this part from our local Brighton DVLA office seeing as we don't have any time now to send it away to Swansea??

I hope so !!!!

Phone the hire company and see if you need it, I've hired cars in Europe and not needed it, it varies from hire company to company.

I have never shown it in Italy. So my gung ho attitude is just go (but sods law and all that). But there again you don't really have an option with so little time now.

Noooo.. There are only a few places they could be as i only put papers in certain places (obviously not because i've checked all those places). There is the slight possibility that I left them in my house in Turkey when we were there last year.. if that's the case then they will just have to stay there !

Well i'm now off to upturn the bedroom!!

DVLA do have a service where they can fax a copy of your licence details to a car hire firm if you have forgotten them. However I'm not sure how it works fully (I worked there for 5yrs but on the vehicle side!) so give them a ring on 0870 240 0009 or find local no on saynoto0870 website.

  • OP don't forget, if you're stopped driving in the UK you don't have a licence to produce to the police until you get a new counterpart.

I rented in Italy 18 months ago and needed to produce both parts - and one of the rental companies was quite a small local affair.

You can apply online and obtain replacements although you have to apply for both the photocard and counterparts (£17.50 for each so a total of £35 for you and your OH). I had to get a replacement counterpart a few months ago and it was returned in 5 days (is that some kind of DVLA record?)! Click here
My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016). :(

For those seeking more detailed advice and guidance regarding small claims cases arising from private parking issues I recommend that you visit the Private Parking forum on PePiPoo.com

As flttuerby says, you can phone the dvla and get them to fax over a copy of the counterpart to the hire company. If i were you, call the hire company ask if you need it, if you do then ask if the dvla service will be ok. The dvla fax directly to the car company so you'll need their fax number. I did it last year..cost about a fiver, maybe a tenner but they did it almost instantly. No problems

I don't know if the DVLA will fax overseas, I do know they fax to the UK, but Italy is a different matter.

I have hired a cars/vans in Italy and never needed to produce the counterpart, try asking the company before you go.
