£2000 govt trade-in allowance

Hi!

Can any one tell me more about Alistair Darling's new initiative to get old, environmentally un-friendly cars off the road...£2000 off the price of a new car if you hand over your oldie for scrapping?

Or is someone pulling my leg?

The major worry for the government is that we will all run out and buy German (etc) cars which will not benefit British industry.

If we were Germany, France or Italy it would be different as they tend to be quite loyal to national car manufacturers. Not us Brits so my feeling is it might not happen.

Plus the dealer's desperate discounts you can get at the moment will all dry up meaning you won't be getting the car any cheaper in reality.

If you can't get £2k off the list price of most cars at the moment you're not trying.

I wish someone was pulling your leg Wisewoman, wouldn't put anything past this shower.

If they had the guts to stand up for Great Britain just once and qualified this offer to include vehicles only made in this country then it just might help a little.

Our masters in the EUSSR wouldn't allow such a thing of course, apart from that it would be remarkably short list of possibles anyway.

Is there anything still made in Britain that isn't a Luxury brand where £2000 is the equivalent of pennies anyway?

Just a few low emission cars at the moment...

Honda Civic.....Jazz from this August though.
Nissan Micra, Note and Quashqai
Mini's
Toyota Auris
Vauxhall Astra 4 door.

Thats about it for small(ish) cars.

Thanks a bundle politicians and greedy city types and union bosses of the last 40 years for helping to reduce us to this whilst filling your own pockets....may they hang their heads in shame....though i won't hold me breath.

If this is introduced, Labour have just lost my vote. No benefit at all to the British taxpayer. Only european car manufacturers will benefit.

No benefit to the environment either - significantly more pollutants are produced manufacturing a car and scrapping it than are produced by actually driving it.

This scheme if introduced will be a waste of our money. every year approximately 2 million cars, mainly between 9 and 14 years old, are scrapped in any case, so the environmental case is weak. In fact many environmentalists would prefer durable cars that can be upgraded as cleaner technology develops as the best solution. As 85% of cars sold are imported then the main benefit would go to foreign companies like Ford and Peugeot, who abandoned car manufacture in Britain years ago, and now find themselves in trouble because of the weak pound / strong euro. We the taxpayers should not bail them out because of their mistakes.
To be fair, Alastair Darling has reservations because of the above, it is Peter Mandelson who is doing the pushing. Say no more.
