We've used both systems and we wouldn't give up our Sky+ now, and HD makes it even better! I think Sky is good value for us when you consider the total package we are on includes 2 Mb broadband, phone line rental, and all UK phone calls up to one hour.

It basically all boils down to what you want to watch.

If the freeview channels meet all your viewing needs then a get a Recorder, which is a one off cost.

Me personally, I subscribe to Sky+ because there are loads of programs that I watch, that are not available on freeview + the Sky+ box is excellent and very easy to use.

Prices start from £16.50 per month so a yearly total of £198 + any initial one-off installation/box cost if any. So I don't know where Leopard has plucked £450/yearly for Sky+ to do a fair comparison to basic freeview.

I pay around £300/yearly for Sky+, Sky Broadband and Sky Talk all in, which covers channels I want to watch that are not available on freeview.

My mother has Sky and a second dish so she can receive foreign language channels.

Would Sky + ONLY record Sky programmes for her ? If so, then I think she's better off with a PVR

Put a USB-TV plug-in unit into the back of your computer (£25) and record Freeview channels onto your harddrive via Windows Media Center - then transfer to DVD (you can use re-writables) to watch on your tv.
Media Center has EPG so you can pre-program your future recording, including series recording.
If you get some video editing software, you can edit out the commercials before you transfer to dvd.

The Humax looks good from Richer Sounds. I have Virgin tv so can i hook them all up so i can record two different channels?

With the Humax you can record two freeview channels at once whilst viewing something you have already recorded, at the same time. It's also got series recording so you can press OK to record a programme from the guide and if it's a series it gives you the option to record all the episodes as they come up.
