I needed to copy VHS tapes to DVD so ended up buying a Toshiba DVD/VHS/HD device with digital tuner - £230 at Argos and a great piece of kit. We've only got Freeview so it depends on whether you have / need Sky.

I have a Panasonic DMR-EX77 whcih is a dvd recorder, hard disk recorder and freeview box combined.

Works very well, but as per previous post, you need to decide if you want Sky or not.

    Sky+
This requires a Sky subscription (for other than free channels) and will only record programs via satellite. It will record 2 progs at same time.

    DVD Recorder with Hard drive
Will record from Sky digibox (via scart) or from Freeview
Will only record 1 prog at same time. You can watch a previous recording while recording a new program. (think this feature also applies to Sky+)

    PVR (Personal Video Recorder)
Will only record Freeview, but good ones have twin tuners so will record 2 progs at same time.

    Horses for courses.

With Sky + you can record two programs at the same time, AND watch one thats recorded. We had a DVD recorder before we got Sky+, and I wouldn't go back now. Besides the recording and playback the ability to link a series is brilliant, also being able to pause and rewind live TV

Get a Humax PVR, great for recording Freeview, no stitch up with Sky charges ever.

I'm seconding the Humax. I've got a PVR 9300T, really good device, obviously can't record to DVD, but do you really need this feature just to playback and record progs? The Humax really is straightforward-one or two clicks to record.

    We bought a Humax FoxSat-HDR (£270) and a Sony RDR-HXD995 (£200 - but the 890 model costs only £180).

Total, one-off, cost £450. But Sky+ was costing us £450 every year.

The Humax plus Sony solution gives 3 simultaneous recording, dual-layer DVD burning and HD. Sky+ doesn't.

And, after 3 years without Sky+ we shall be about £1,000 ahead.

For just over £1,000 we bought a 52" Sony LCD television.

For us, it was a no-brainer. And we haven't missed Sky+ for one moment.

Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:

As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.

    Another vote for Humax.

Just taken delivery of a new Humax PVR to replace one I bought three years ago when PVR technology wasn't as advanced.

Recommend you look at the "Manager Special" offers on the Humax Direct website (http://www.humaxdirect.co.uk/prodCat2.asp?cat=Factory) for some good deals and speedy delivery.

I'm very happy with the one I just took delivery of :D

I have a Humax PVR-9150 and it's absolutely brilliant for time shifting TV. £123.95 from Richer Sounds. Can't imagine ever being without one now!
They do a 5 year guarantee for an extra 10%.

Dreambox with a hard drive, transfer over to the PC to burn to dvd. Best of both worlds.
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it
