O2 wants a £100 deposit for phone

I am switching my monthly contract from Orange to O2's 200 min anytime with Nokia 6230i phone. I signed up through E2Save who contacted me to say that O2 want to take a £100 deposit (in addition to the monthly charge) for 6 months after which they will refund the money. They assured me that this is not unusual. Is this true? I've never had any problems with my credit history. Does this suggest I now have one?

it could be anything from a wrong digit in the ID you have submitted to having moved address.

Its worth having a look at your credit record to see, but I used to be a store manager at a mobile phone retailer, and it isn't uncommon (about 15%) to ask for a deposit, but as i say, sometimes when they are inputting your details, they can make a slight error which throws an automatic deposit even if the rest is correct and the check is fine.

    hope this helps a little.

It might depend on your credit risk at the time you supplied your details. It could be one of the reasons why they are asking for a deposit. Remember to claim back your deposit or else they will benefit from £100 of YOUR money.

Just to add to what jonnym said (I work on the high st for the same company you're dealing with and would say about 15% is about right) that your deposit, should you pay it, is refunded as a credit on your o2 account automatically after the 6 months (providing you've paid your bills, of course) or if you prefer, you can call them just before the 6 months is up, and they'll send it to you as a cheque. Its quite common and I've never had a problem with it being done.
