NXEC trains: what happens if I miss last train due to late connection

I'm buying a NXEC ticket. I'm booking an NXEC advance ticket to cover that entire leg of my journey. It's going to be a lot cheaper (less than 1/4 of the price) if I travel out on the last train of the night. That journey involves a connection, though - with only 10 minutes. Fine, if the train's on time. If it's late, though, I could miss this...and then there are no more trains until the morning.

Would NXEC have to pay for a taxi, then? Or would I be spending the night in a station?

if delay is longer than 10 mins ud prolly get a refund or part refund however it may be through claiming... so you'd have to pay for the taxi first...

There are specified minimum connection times for each station, if I recall correctly. If you allow less time than the specified minimum, you will not be able to reclaim anything.

If you found the journey as a through journey on the rail enquiry system, though, I think it would only show you journies which allowed sufficient connection time, so you should be OK.

Thanks - booked the ticket. It's well within the min connection time (and I'm fit enough to move fairly quick when needed, and may also check what platform my connection will go from :D ).

The station's staffed 24/7, so hopefully if the connection's late they will be able to pay for what will be a v v expensive cab ride up front...

Bitsandpieces, you are not guaranteed a taxi to your destination. If it's deemed to cost too much due to the distance then they will probably put you up in a hotel for the night especially as your on your own. What station is it your risking the tight connection from?

Thanks - actually wouldn't mind a night in a hotel...so long as I don't end up sleeping on the platform!

'Last connections' do tend to be held for late running trains. Not a universal rule, and it won't be forever, but it could be a help

If you do end up missing the connection, you must speak to a member of staff, especially as the station is staffed 24hrs (if not you're supposed to use the help point to speak to the control room). If you do, they'll make arrangements for you, but you shouldn't just hop in a taxi, pay for it, and expect them to give you a refund (it needs to be validated by a member of staff to prove you were there at that time, and they'll usually use a contract taxi and pay for it directly not through you).

...And if you do need to make a connection that may be being held, make sure you tell the first member of platform staff you see - they'll radio over to the other platform to say you're coming.

Even better, if the train you are travelling on looks to be running late, let the guard / ticket inspector on the train know that you need to make a connection, as they can alert staff at the station to hold the connecting srvice if possible.
  • The online journey planners will not tell you about later connections. And in many cases an alternative route is possible, so ask when trouble becomes apparent.

That said I was given the run around at Sheffield Station once before boarding the first train of my journey, which was already late.
