I also agree with the adage - better to post many times than not at all. I also agree there are cheaper dog foods than iams, surely though this bit of the forum is for freebies - not whether or not samples/freebies are morally correct. If that were the case - we'd all be championing freetrade products whenever one of their range IE tea bags was posted as a freebie etc. This thread should have been a simple one about the fact iams have a free sample going, instead it turned into how iams make their product and animal testing.
In summary, thanks Fenris for the post, well done to hawkwindot for apologising. Sorry for blagging on. End of.0 -

only joking about the 30th bowl. But who test these things before they all let loss on the general public.
I would have been shot in my previous life as a computer programming for having a field limit of 4 characters on an addressline2 field.
Edit:
I think this thread should be locked as it is going a bit off topic.0 -
Bit of a long one. Got this reply from Iams after I'd emailed them about the research information. I know it is off topic but this topic has raised concerns and this will give the company's view of things.
Dear Stephanie
Thank you for taking the time to contact us about our nutritional feeding
studies. You've received some incorrect and outdated information. An extreme
activist organisation continues a misleading campaign featuring footage
that's more than 2 years old of a facility we no longer use. This inaccurate
account includes examples of dogs and cats that were not part of our
studies, and makes claims of activities that we never authorised.
We want to be perfectly clear: Iams will not fund or participate in any
study requiring or resulting in the euthanasia of cats or dogs. This
principle is just one of eight points in our strict research policy that is
approved by an independent Animal Care Advisory Board. The members of our
Advisory Board are from respected animal welfare organisations such as the
ASPCA and the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). We chose these
individuals because they share our interest in reducing, refining, and
replacing animals in research.
In addition, the Advisory Board conducts unannounced visits to review the
care and welfare of the dogs and cats participating in our feeding studies
at our internal and external sites.
To see a summary of recent facility reports, to view video footage of
animals in our care, or to review our research policy, please visit our web
site at https://www.iamstruth.com.
You can also see a facility report by utilizing the following URL:

Other important information we'd like to share:
We support the ultimate elimination of laboratory feeding studies as
scientifically valid alternatives become available. Iams is actively working
with external partners to develop new research methods in pet nutrition
which do not require laboratory feeding studies.
By October 2006, we will transition our nutritional feeding studies to be
limited to just three kinds of locations: pet owners' homes, our Animal Care
Centre and trusted partners where dogs and cats already have homes, such as
shelters and assistance dog organisations.
We have broken ground on an innovative animal care facility expansion that
incorporates feedback from our independent International Animal Care
Advisory Board.
The new facility will include: enhanced dog living quarters, increased
natural lighting and a dog park, among other amenities.
Continuous improvement is a key strategy and we will continue to develop
reliable in-home methodologies and alternatives along with mutually
beneficial relationships with trusted partners who maintain dogs and cats.
We are taking full responsibility for the destiny of all dogs and cats that
participate in our feeding studies at both internal and external sites. Our
dogs and cats are either adopted into loving homes or placed in the Iams
retirement centre when they no longer participate in our feeding studies.
This is unprecedented in the pet arena; we know of no other company that is
taking this level of responsibility for the ongoing well-being of all dogs
and cats with whom they work.
We are proactively sharing the Iams Welfare Program for dogs and cats in an
effort to make it the norm. An Iams Behaviorist has shared our socialisation
and enrichment program with shelters, veterinarians and others to illustrate
that it's possible to enrich and socialise in such an environment. In
addition, we recently presented our program to others in the pet food
industry. We are committed to continual improvement in this area and are
looking to adopt best practices in animal care and nutritional research
wherever they are created. We will continue to actively search and reapply
good ideas from around the world.
Thank you again for taking the time to contact us and for giving us the
opportunity to respond with the facts. If you need further information or
have specific questions, please visit our web site or contact our Care Line
on 0800 426 785. Don't hesitate to ask for me personally.
Kind Regards

Can I say first that I didn't feel that hawkwind (or whoever it was) was attempting to put to the op - i think this is a great forum and i have very rarely seen any agnostic comments.
It's a fair point that there are 2 sides to every story - I don't mean to jump on any band wagon but what I would say is be very careful and read between the lines with what many companies state re: their ethics/procedures. Many procedures can take place in alternative countries that do not prohibit its use - I am not suggesting that this is the case with this company.
Previously and very recently, I have approached reputable professionals in the field - vets, lecturers, ex-employees of related companies and charities - a common theme has emerged that such procedures do take place. I am not in a position to offer any evidence but I was advised to not buy from iams, whiskas, and other "commercial" companies as a result of the perceived procedures (if that is the right wording)....anyway, in short - if anyone is concerned about this, try Burns pet food which is holistic. there are other companies too but i found out about burns on this website - have a flitter through this forum and there should be a link to it as a freebie - they send quite ample sizes!!
anyway - for what was a well-meaning post, i am sorry that it has become more serious. i am on the "don't test on animals" fence but i respect other people's views.
i personally thank the op and hawkwind (or whoever it was...must remember to actually find out the name) for putting 2 sides to a freebie - it's good politics haha
