Hi all,
Thanks for all your help so far. I now need to know answers to the following.
How do I disable windows messenger?
I have never used any chat software, in all of the six years I have been online, and I aint going to start now.
How do I ensure that I don't have a rogue dialler on my new setup?
I have had a look at my network connections and they all appear to have the correct dial up number. There are two connections available to me. One is for Fast4 and one is for Freeserve..
The Fast4 starts with 0808 and the Freeserve connection starts with 0844. I do hope that none of these is a rogue dialler
I await your contributions

As soon as you have Service PacK 2 Windows Messenger Is disabled by default.
It woul be highly improbable to get a rogue dialler after a new set-up
To check open Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options, Connections Tab
and click on any dialer accounts that are not yours and click remove.
If you have Broad Band That becomes even more unlikely
but if you use a phoneline Broad Band connection it is slightly
more likely than a Cabled Modem like Telewests service.0 -

I think he means Windows Messenger as in the on that connects to the MSN13 Protocol not the LAN Windows Messenger. To do that just open add/remove programs.
Then click on Add/Remove Windows Components
Then uncheck the tick Next to Windows Messenger and click Next
Then you're done. If you ever decide to change your mind just repeat the process but place a tick next to it.
If you want to install SP2 just uninstall your AV software if you still have the disk or Install files. Install SP2 then reinstall your AV software. If you then install a 3rd party firewall it should then ask you which firewall you want to use. Just select the third party one.0 -

Windows Messenger is what im on about not MSN Messenger
Its turned off by default when SP2 is installed to stop the annoynig
grey pop-ups, and not the chat that you have to have a passport for.0 -
Yes but I think Leo was talking about Windows Messenger (Like MSN Messenger) that comes with Windows XP instead of bundling MSN Messenger, it opens when you open Outlook express and some other programs. To disable that you just have to do what I said.0

Thats what I said :rolleyes:0

No its not, you said about the LAN comuncation program named "Windows Messenger"
I was talking about the MSN13 Protocol program named "Windows Messenger"
Its all very confusing, but I think Microsoft have fixed it in Windows Vista, with the creation of Windows Live Messenger.0 -
