My gran has had breast cancer in the recent past (all better now thankfully) and has lots of other bits and pieces wrong - blood pressure etc.
She's 86 and can still get insurance declaring all of her medical conditions from Age Concern or the Post Office. I'm not sure how much it is - a little bit more than normal I know - but she still goes to Spain every year (sometimes twice) to visit family.

Found cover at Insureandgo. About a third of most other quotes!

Tried Insureand go and was told 75 max! How did you do it?

try BMC ( British Mountaineering council) seriously I know you might think your aged relatives won't be clambering mountains but they do ordinary travel insurance too with no age limit- I got their details off another thread in the forums here. They make a loading on the premium according to age. As long as you can agree to the health declaration which is quite straightforward and basically only asks if you are waiting to see a consultant or have seen one in the last 12 months other than for regular checkups. I got a quote for a friends dad who is 86 and had some health problems in the past and it came up with £120 (including the £20 joining fee to the BMC to take the travel insurance out) and that for was going to the US. We had quotes of anything between a few hundred up to 4000 from other companies and whilst age concern would cover him they wouldn't cover any of his past medical conditions.
    Definitely worth a try....

The post your saw was April 2004 - they've obviously changed their rules since then.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Make sure they take their EHIC (previously E111) with them.
