Yes, try to get 3 different varieties of blueberries - last year my local large Tesco had good named varieties in around May - ( eg "Chandler" and "Bluecrop")

    Hello,

Three blueberry plants of a different variety. Or just two. I do well with my two. Mine are called "Brigetta" and the other is "Duke". I think there are some varieties that are self-fertile i.e pollinate themselves with no other blueberries around. However, most need or at least benefit, from having a different variety as a neighbour.

It does get confusing when there's so many varieties to chose from! They can vary in taste too! For example my "Brigetta" is more acidic than "Duke".

It can work in your favour to have different varieties that ripen and are ready for picking at different times.

You might find these links helpful.

    All the best :)

I'm Jealous now! I'd love to have a Chandler...... they are the largest fruiting aren't they? And taste delicious too? Bluecrop is good one too. I'll have to keep dreaming for now :)

Ah, ok, i get it now! So does that mean if I get a victoria plum tree i have to find out if that is a "self-fertile" tree or if I need other trees around it? If so, am i just better looking for all self polinating plants? Will that mean less bees and wasps in the garden?

Google tells me Victoria Plum is self fertilising. Self pollinating plants still need bees and other insects to pollinate (I'm a waspist and I hate them - the only psychotic insect who will sting just because ;)) it's just that pollen from the same plant can be moved around instead of needing to cross pollinate from another plant - I guess some could be wind pollinated, some people pollinate their indoor tomatoes with paintbrushes don't they?

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable can explain it better though :o

    Hello.

That's completely untrue I'm afraid. Wasps will only sting if they or their nest is threatened. Or if they think they are threatened.

We had a wasp next in the garden lawn the whole of last year, sensible actions ie staying away from it with the mower not letting the kids play around it, meant we had no problems at all. They always move to another nest every year, so now they are gone.
The kids (and me) got to see a fascinating wasp nest in action, the garden got rid of loads of pests early on in the year, as they take pests to the nest for the grubs and later on in the year the plum tree was heaving with them :D always a downside.

What I'm trying to say is that wasps are part of the ecosystem and are not the manic stinging maniacs that people think they are, don't wave your arms around like a loony when they get close to you and the chances of you getting stung are minimal. I've taught my kids that and we've had no problems or no near misses.......... or no frantic screaming scared kids either. Just kids who know what the insects in the garden are and what they do.
Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.
