You can't have leaks unless you have secrets. what happened to open government?
  • I'm a bit baffled by Nadine Dorres making statements that she is considering suing McBride for Libel. Someone needs to point out to her that for it to be libel he would have needed to have published them or intended to do so - which he didn't. English law does not define email sent from one person to another never intended for wider dissemination to be "published" and therefore covered by libel laws. The law does however allow her to sue the person who obtained these documents and published them thus creating the libel - that would be the chappie writing the Guido Fawkes blog.

Anyway, she should know all about smear campaigns and backhand ways to rubbish the reputation of people - she's the author of several.

These are absolutely totally brilliant Damian.

I'll think about timing and sort out the technology with Andrew this week so we can go asap.

Do we want to tip off anyone about Red Rag having set up? Walters? I could do it and say LabouLlist had been sent the link anonymously.

Your reaction to all this has made me chuckle.

Rochdale - I have some sympathy with your efforts to defend the government through moderate argument and realism rather than rabid hyperbole - I try and do the same with the opposition/conservatives.

But this was beneath you. Bringing spouses into play as McBride's tried to do is totally unacceptable. Your comment has strayed into that territory.

That proves the point. The email was sent to a handful of people. They planned to concoct a pile of disgusting smears and publish those - but didn't. The email that caused all the furore was not published by its author and therefore is not libel. If Nadine wants to sue anyone for Libel it'll have to be Guido.

It was dishonest, despicable bahaviour and it warranted the perpetator resigning. However, his boss doesn't even feel the need to say sorry.

How's that then? When it comes to others, the boss carries the can. They were quite happy to let the head of Haringey social services take the rap and they got rid of her.

As ever, more of the same from this govt. - lies, deceit and double standards.

The email was published in that it was sent to others however if she takes it to court it would more than likely be malicious falsehood than libel. IMHO

They intended to, but didn't get round to it.

Of course it is! The author had every intention to have the rumours published, just not on the No.10 web site.
