But yeah, the wage for a waitress in the USA is something like $2-3 per hour as they're expected to get tips, and I'd imagine it's only marginally more for maids.

Right im gonna post an answer to this post and then run for the hills to avoid the fall out.

If they are only getting paid $2 to $3 an hour they should get a different job, hell they would earn more in mc donalds.

I do tip but I tip what is appropriate not what custom obliges me to, ie the whole 15% to 20% when I go out to eat in the states isnt gonna happen unless the service is exceptional.

Anyway tip what ya want and if they dont like it sod em!!!!

Right im off to the hills now.

    Back soon

Don't tip in the UK generally as our wages are higher. However abroad normally do as maids are paid next to nothing and rely on tips. $2-3 dollars a day usually. However if the room is left a state or a meal isn't served properly then they loose that tip.

I always tip housekeeping abroad, but never in the uk. I usually just leave this on one of the pillows on the bed. Usually a few pounds a day......

You do have a fair point there but I have actually known a hotel reception manager who started her career as a chamber maid when she was 16 because she wanted to learn all aspects of the industry inside out. Most of the housekeeping staff where I worked had young children and chose the job because they finished at 3pm in time to pick their kids up from school.

I never leave a tip for them. Only once in Italy when I locked myself out and the maid let me back in. I always leave my room clean and tidy, with minimal work required. Thats enough for me!

I'm not in the business of providing subsidies for the hotel industry. They should pay their staff enough and factor this into the rate they charge me. Tipping just lets the employer off the hook.

Of course I am a total hypocrite, who tips the taxi driver, the hairdresser and those who provide table service. Thats because it has become expected and not doing so would be awkward.

My mum has been advised to tip the maid US$10 per day on her 15 night cruise. I think this is too high as that is US$150 for the duration of her holiday.....what do you guys think?

BTW re OP - I would tip a few dollars per day in a normal hotel. Not US$10 though ;)
  • I never tip room maids but every now and tell them, "You don't need to clean my room today" I'm a messy person anyway, so an unmade bed doesn't bother me. Seeing their faces when I tell them, is as good as any tip.

I don't tip. Unless someone goes above and beyond for me, I wouldn't even think about it.

When paying at a restaurant or paying a taxi driver I'll give £20 instead of £19, purely for convenience, but I definitely wouldn't tip someone that I wasn't already giving money to, like a maid or a bellboy.
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it

US$10 a day is likely to cover the tips for the cabin steward, waiter and assistant waiter and be added to your mum's onboard account.
