Tipping the room maid

Simple one this.. Does anyone tip room maids* in hotels?

I normally leave some money in the ashtray on the last day, but I have an idea this might not be the norm.

What do you do? - and do you see any benefits?

*No, I don't mean like that.

    Not in the UK.

In fact not even abroad. I always put my spare change in a bag on the flight home (make a wish i seem to recall?)

Depends how long I stay and type of hotel, but normally I do, particulary when they have seemed to make the extra effort

    Hi,

Yes I nearly always tip when abroad ... might not be very much ... maybe £1 or 2 .... depending on length of stay .... not so much when in UK .... depends on type of trip ... business / pleasure.

    always when abroad.
i normally put all my small change ie everything under 50 cents in a glass or ashtray and just let it accumulate.
even at home i put all coins under 50p in a bottle as i hate trying to sort out change when i'm in a shop or bar.
that way you don't miss it and it will usually amount to a decent amount when you leave.
i would normally check that it comes to about €1 per day.

At the end of our stay in SC I have a tidy up and wipe around. I ask other holiday makers by the pool if they would like my mags ( always take a small pile, Take a break, etc) often get a taker as they cost a lot more abroad. The left over food goes to the lucky person I spot when leaving the appartment (English or not) always gratefull - the 1/2 tubs of marg, drinking water, packets...The cleaner we leave the small change and bottles of wine.Last time I gave the children next door (owner occupiers) our floats - large ring and lilo.

3 weeks to my holiday in the sun:j

I never tip maids in hotels. I see no reason for doing so. I do, however, leave a small amount for the cabin maid after a cruise, as invariably they will have made a real effort to make your stay comfortable.

I hate the idea of tipping anyway. I can see no reason to pay someone extra just for doing their job, while others would never get a gratuity. Why would you tip a taxi driver but not a bus driver, for instance? Or your hairdresser but not your chiropodist?;)

I give the maid €10 a week in Europe and leave $2-3 a day in the US.

I always tip if we've stayed for a couple of nights or more. As for amount, it depends what level of service we receive.....

    depends on the hotel...

in NYC, on my last stay, i left $2 a day by the tv, and it was always taken by the maid who cleaned my room, (at the affinia 50) however, in a different hotel, in NYC (Cosmopolitan) they never seem to take the tip as such, so end up leaving it in the room when i've checked out.

weird that... and yeah, i feel like i have to tip, as my room is normally rather messy.
