Yes I agree Andy it isn an awkward non customer focussed way of benefit, and really ought to be made simpler in so many different ways. Unfortunately jc staff can do nothing about it, the only advice that can be given is lobby local mps and get enough support from others with it.
This change of signing off when you go abroad must be fairly recent as they use to allow you to go for 2 weeks without closing your claim as I did in 2004. It must have been imposed for whatever reason by the DWP wanting to make life more difficult for claimants and had nothing to do with MP's or an employment act etc.0 -
It has NEVER been the case andy when going abroad. If you go away in the uk, then thats entirely different.
EDITED: for the reply by andy below this post.
What used to happed is that you signed your es40s to sign off claiming the day you went abroad was last date of claim. A jsa4rr was issued ready for you to hand in when you returned to claim from that date. It was all handled locally by the jc, and was a smooth transaction and kept the same signing days / patterns.
Now its handled by the call centres and is much more hassle.0 -

I think you are wrong on this. I went to Cyprus in 2004 for 2 weeks (holiday already booked before becoming unemployed) and did not close my claim but just had to fill in a form to say I was unavailable for work during that period and to sign on when I return home on my first day back.(Much simpler then now !) Apologies to everyone as this thread has slightly gone off the original issue.0 -
just wondered how it all worked out my daughter has just done the same thing and is really worried0

The OP only posted 18 tiomes and hasn't been on here since 25/05 so I think it somewhat unlikely you will get an answer tbh!0

I failed to sign-on yesterday.
I attend a kind of job search/club via the chamber of commerce, which usually happens the day after I sign-on. The date was changed to Tuesday instead, and it through me.
I sent all day Wednesday thinking it was Tuesday (didn't help that I'd had a week of sleepless nights due to this flamin chesty cough).
Anyway, just got back from signing on. I was told they would referred to independent decision maker, and I could expect to hear from them within the next two weeks. I was also informed that I could lose a weeks benefits.
I'm not in panic mode just yet! I'll wait to see if I receive my normal payment this weekend.Always interested in networking with small business owners with regard to marketing opportunities...0 -
when all you have to do to get your money is sign on once a fortnight.......its a pretty lame excuse to say you couldnt remember what day it was! n0

The way things are today, I wouldn't be surprised if they stop your money.
They're just waiting for any little mistake you make and they pounce on you.
I'd be willing to bet that in any average town there will be at least a dozen people with their money suspended.0 -
Funnily, but if I 'forget' what day it is, and didn't show up to work.......I'm sure I wouldn't be paid either!0
