I know now I was stupid to download the beta - I was told countless times by friends but it seemed like a good idea at the time - famous last words.

I phoned microsoft on the number given for problems with IE8beta and was put through to him. He spent a long time sorting it out for me.
I received emails from him and his boss asking if I was pleased with the service I had received from Microsoft. I was delighted and said so I was unaware of the stranger residing on my lappy and also unaware that some things were missing from my lappy.

I just have to resign myself to the fact that I cannot take any photos over the holidays as the memory is full.
Thank you everyone - I really appreciate it.

I can't explain how you have ended up with an 'alien' scanner driver installed, but have you tried just reinstalling the drivers that came with your camera from the CD? No reason why these should not install alongside the Xerox, as that is a entirely different device.
Check that the original camera software is fully uninstalled (in Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs) and then reinstall it.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

How does the camera connect to the laptop?

    By USB?

It is quite possible that it will be visible as an external storage device in My Computer/File Manager and you can cut and paste the files from camera to laptop without needing the camera driver.

That will delete them from the camera memory and free up space for more.

Make sure you take backups once they are on the laptop.
