I planted two seeds in each compartment of my seed trays as I had hundreds of tomato seeds. At what stage do I remove the weaker one? The plants are now mostly around 2 inches tall, is now a good time?

And do I just remove the shorter one, or should I be keeping the more leafy one?

And do I need to pull it out with the roots, or just snip the top off..?

    Sorry, total newbie here!!

Snip them off now, keep the one that looks strongest.

my seeds were in an unheated greenhouse from the start, have to say it's been the slowest year ever for things to germinate, toms have taken almost a month and courgettes, aubergines and peppers have done nowt
  • I have some in one of those little plastic greenhouses and potted the rest last week and put them on a shelf outside the kitchen window. they seem ok. I am hoping they will not get too cold as I have loads and no room in the house for them now.

Well it looks like i jumped the gun, freezing fog here this morning so i`ve brought all my toms and peppers back into the house.
I have an unheated kitchen so it shouldn`t be too much of a shock for them but now i can hardly move in there.

Fingers crossed for the weather to pick up again now.

Mine are in the unheated greenhouse, and the temp fell to about 8 deg C last night, but they look fine this morning.
Could do with a bit of sun though!

    How big are they?

Mine are still tiny and i`m a bit worried that it`s too cold for them now.

  • Just a thought why don't you put half outside and leave half inside. That way you hedge your bets and if they do die you haven't lost everything. Mine have been outside for at least 6 weeks but I have the added protection of a electric heater on a frost thermostat which means that if it gets really cold it will come on. Now, and this is going to sound really sad. Prior to having my heater I bought one of those remote infra red type weather stations so that I could keep it in the greenhouse but see from inside what the temperature was. These have got a lot cheaper than when I first bought them and are quite addictive!
Enough money to live on so retired early...planning to see where life takes me:D
