Named driver on a young persons insurance policy??

How does it work:confused:

When she was test driving the car, the salesman said if she put me down as a named driver it would help reduce her premium.

He said their was no risk to my insurance at all:confused:

I've compared it & it does bring it down.

But whats the catch???

There is not a catch, just make sure you are totally honest with the Insurers eg declare any convictions and claims. You will simply be a named driver on her policy and able to drive her car should you wish.

P.S If your buying the car on finance do not let the salesman sell you Gap Cover as his will be very expensive, you will be able to find the same cover for a fraction of the cost on the internet

No catch as far as I'm aware. Both my parents are insured as named drivers on my policy to bring the premium down and I am in my 30's with full no claims! Also very handy to have them insured fully comp in case they need to drive the car for some reason.

As stated above just make sure that you declare any claims/convictions etc. I've also noticed that when I sorted out my insurance this year a few companies have started to ask whether my parents would be frequent or occasional users so be honest with your answer to that one.

IF she had a claim/accident would it affect my insurance?
& vice/versa, if I had a claim on mine would it affect hers?

    Thank you all so much

If she had an accident it would not affect your insurance unless she was a named driver on your policy in which case she would need to declare to your Insurers she has had a claim and they would apply a load.

If you had an accident while driving her car you would need to declare to your own insurers you have had an accident. It would not affect your no claims bonus but your Insurers may load your premium.

This is why we did it - the reduced premium was a bonus.

If she has an accident in her car then it won't affect your insurance on your car (assuming she isn't a named driver on your policy).

If you have an accident (in any car) then it might increase her premium on next renewal as she would have to declare that you had had an accident/claim.

If this did happen then she could simply choose not to add you as a named driver at that renewal. However, she would also then lose any saving in premium that she had because you were a named driver.

The main reason for a reduction in premium is the reduction in risk. Young people who add their parents onto their policy are more likely to carry their parents on journeys and act more responsibly than with 4 tanked up mates in the car egging them on.

Also a young driver with a parent named on the policy is also less likely to drink drive. (These were internal stats that I saw when I worked at an Insurer).

The car is in my daughters name, she will be the main driver.

However would be handy me being a named driver, as her car is more fuel efficient & if/when we do go somewhere thats some distance we can take her car & share the drive (I'm only 3rd party on mine if I drive another car).
