Just received my deal tokens which I thought I would use towards eating out. Can anyone recommend which is the best bar/restaurant to use them in. I am worried that some chains might object to me using the vouchers.

Have been several times to Cafe Rouge. The food is nice. All freshly cooked but a bit expensive and drinks too. A nice atmosphere in most of them/French style.

When they give you the bill just pay with your tokens. No need to say at first that you have them.

Part of it I suppose is down to making their clubcard attractive for people to use. If it just allowed discounts on Tesco products it would not be perceived as good and less folk may use it.
So you think Tesco are paying more than £10? I can see why Tesco want to add some variety, so maybe Tesco would be willing to pay £11 to Nationwide, rather than £10, but I can't see how that could justify Tesco paying much more than that. Personally, the attraction of the deals is getting 4% of my Tesco spend back. It makes no difference to me if this is on Nationwide MOTs or on my next Tesco shop.

In terms of MOTs etc costing less, the buying power of Tesco will mean that they can negotiate significantly cheaper prices. Tesco pay a small amount to the MOT centre, but in turn guarantee X thousand MOTs at that lower price.
I agree that a volume discount would make sense, but not a 75% discount. Businesses offer volume discounts because extra volume means economies of scale. That is, because some of their costs do not increase with the extra business, so their cost per job goes down and their profits on each job therefore go up. For instance, Nationwide pay the same rent for their garage whether they do 100 MOTs a day or 90 per day, so the rent per MOT will be lower if they get an extra 10 MOTs. But I can't believe these cost reductions would justify much more than a 25% discount.

In many cases this will make better sense for Nationwide who will also pick up any corrective repairs to the cars which are brought in for the MOT.
But that is true of any MOT. If the chance of picking up extra work justifies doing an MOT for £10, why don't they just offer this as their standard price to everyone?

Still doesn't seem to add up, to me.

I ordered days out tokens and used them in Bella Italia.

All the deals have order codes which start with either S or P. S ones you can order as many or as little as you like. the P ones are full payment ones...for example RAC membership or Adult tickets for Alton Towers. where you can't part pay with vouchers/cash.

In the past I've ordered restaurant tickets and used them as days out and vice versa.
    thanks:beer:
wish i had known that the other week, will save them for my next visit.just ordered some more vouchers too:T

  • Hello there

Is there somewhere I can see my points account and how they total is built up

eg. Date Shopping in store 10 points
    Date Petrol 20 points
    Date Online 15 points

    Total 45 points

I can only find a total and it's hard to check if everything that should be added is

    Thanks

    xxxdxxx
You can only check out your running total online, but when you get the quarterly statement it will be broken down to show what the points are for.
Olympic bronze challenge-started 7/1/06-total so far is £194.30
  • No, I've absolutely no idea, I'm just happy they do!
  • Well as we well know Tesco is one of the most unsuccessful companies in the Uk currently with a shrinking customer base and its competitors stealing customers everyday and losing money hand over fist :):)

Seriously i've never really fathomed the club card "Deal" thing myself and how they do it..All I know is I buy all my petrol from Tesco as its as cheap as anywhere else around here..I pop in and do a bit of "Top Up" shopping but as a money saver buy my main quality shop from Lidl..still get enough club card vouchers as I use £40 quid of petrol a week to have a day out with the family on Tesco once in a while
The Early bird may catch the worm ...but its the second mouse that gets all the cheese!
  • Its also really good advertising for the companies involved. They are having their name publicised to millions of customers while also getting new customers. Its all about marketing - getting people to know your name.

Also having a poke around Tesco.com the other day it wouldnt suprise me if a lot of there offers are things that companies cant shift (books for example when I was looking). It makes people think they are getting a bargin (75% discount) while also shifting massive amounts of spare stock

I was scratching my head over this in MFI recently.

I would be very interested to know how it all works and what margins are given at what stage in the process. I hope somebody comes on who can answer your question.

It gets even more complicated however for those of us who are points freaks. We have seen many examples of Tesco recently giving away a stupid amount of points for very little spend. So I can spend £10 at Tesco and receive 1,000 points, which equals either £10 off in Tesco or £40 elsewhere.

I have often walked away from Tesco wondering how such a retail giant can offer promotions with obvious loop holes in them. but, hey I can live with it if they can

I have a marketing background myself and fully understand the value of creating customer loyalty in such a competitive environment, but 'buying' customer loyalty at such a high price seems a little strange.

...you also have to remember all those who don't have clubcards ... Tesco keep the 1% in those cases so I'm guessing it makes a few bob in itself.

An MOT only requires mainly labour and tools, but no used components.

Some places offer up to 25% off an MOT if you take in their advertising voucher, so there's certainly room for cutting margins.

Whether the sums add up is debateable. However, bear in mind the cost of advertising. The cost of giving Tesco a discount to get free advertising through their channels for a period of time reaching users they might not otherwise have reached has high strategical advantages.

Whether its worth continuing in the long term is another matter. ;)
