That's a plural of Mii which are the characters you produce to represent yourself in the games. Take a look at the Mii channel from the main entry screen.0

Unless you have the browser I'm pretty much certain the only place the Wii will connect is to Nintendo. For all I know the browser goes through them too as I don't have it (and nor will you unless you buy it).
I imagine all the content is going to be child safe - if it weren't there would be a huge outcry for sure. Even though its a Japanese company your children aren't going to be assailed with anime !!!!!!.0 -

You can't download stuff onto the Wii like you can a PC (no illegal songs etc)
You can browse the net and find the full nastiness of the world on it. I'm surprised Nintendo didn't build any content filtering in - but if you are worried about it, just delete the Browser channel.0 -
