You say you work from home. Does you work require you to use email via outlook or outlook express etc? If it does then don't use AOL. They block the mail sending port (port 25) as part of their "anti spam" measures.
Basically you'll be able to recieve you mail but you can't send and hence knackered for communication.

You're lucky or using a routed webmail via 143 then.

  • Avoid AOL like the plague.

As someone from the IT sector, i've always avoided them purposefully know what a terrible reputation they have for customer service, and making it impossible to leave.

However, I'm just about create a post documenting how they've been charging me for Internet Access I never requested, have the incorrect billing details, and after months won't cancel the continuous authority on my bank account. The bank has sent them numerous letter that they've ignored, and apparently Barclays can't prevent them taking out money.

To make matters worse I now live in the U.S. - I'm at my witts end and don't know what to do.

Again - AVOID AOL AT ALL COSTS! They're thieves and and cretins.

I think you have to change it to use port 587 or IMAP? :p

Imap is niether here nor there that's recieve only.
Most servers don't support port 587 for smtp traffic. Which means you're knackered if you wish to use a 3rd party email system and not AOL's.

    Ah,

I guess you would have to use webmail.

However, AOL, IMHO have been great to me, and I have nothing but parse for their service.

I've helped someone set up Mozilla Thunderbird on AOL, I'm certain I used ports143 and 587.
They've used it for about 10 months with no problems at all.

    Ah, found settings HERE
    Move along, nothing to see.

Correct Spud. Now please go back and read my previous posts.

That's with AOL's email service and AOL's email alone.
What happens if you work from home and have a whoever@non-aol-email.com that is used for work.
AOL block the standard outward mail port so you can't send from this address on an AOL internet connection this rendering it pretty much useless.

Stay away from AOL at all costs. I have been with AOL for almost 3 years. They used to be good but after Carphone warehouse took AOL over, it has become crap. The speed drops during peak hours, customer service is a joke. They are also known to continue direct debits even after cancelling. If you want my advice, go with anyone but AOL. Some very relaible ISP ratings at Kitz forum. Google it.. I am not allowed to post links here.. (see where AOL is)..:rotfl:
