Is it better to have a longer Ethrenet cable or phone cable??

Hi, I need some help so thought I would pick your brains.

I have a newish modem and want to be able to sit it on top of a cupboard. The cables I have aren't long enough so I need to buy a new one. I want my computer connected by ethrenet so, what will give the best result..... longer ethrenet ( which will allow me to put the modem exactly where I want) or a longer phone wire (which will allow me to tuck the modem in a corner) ?

I have seen Ethrenet cables for sale on Ebay will these be good enough to do the job? Or, are they cheap enough to buy from say, PC World?

TIA

For best speed, you need to connect the modem to the master socket. A longer ethernet cable is the way to go.

Longer ethernet. Ethernet is a better quality cable.

As for buying it, ebay will be a LOT cheaper than PC World.

    Ethernet every time.

You can also run phone cables over Ethernet if you wish - but still not as good as running a networking signal, rather than phone signal, over the cable.

Another vote for ethernet. No doubt.

Ethernet is one of the best quality signal lines you can get... You'll even find people wiring this stuff all over the house to even send tv signals and things around the house instead of using coax cable!

If its for a modem, plug it into the master phone plug and just run your ethernet cable to your computer

Our own master socket, due to reorganisation of furniture to accommodate a large-screen telly :o , is now in a rather inaccessible position.

I wanted to retain easy access to our modem/router, so I bought a thick, shielded, 5-metre, high-speed modem lead for it. From the modem/router onwards it's Cat5e Gigabit Ethernet cable all the way, though. Given the choice, Ethernet cable is always best. Wireless routers (in bridge mode) are positioned upstairs, plugged into a Gigabit switch.

The 5-metre lead didn't slow things down (we get about 6.3 Mb/sec on an "up to 8 Mb/sec" telephone line) but an experiment with an ordinary, thin, unshielded, 5 metre telephone extension lead (out of interest) did.

I buy my Ethernet cables online from here: good cable, good connectors, good prices, fast and friendly service and they can provide Cat5e in eleven different colours - which is very helpful for making exposed cable runs unobtrusive!

Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:

you'd now be better off living in one.

Go for the ethernet cable and keep the phone cable as short as possible.

Do not go to PC World, you will pay a fortune for poor quality cable, I would suggest your local independent computer shop who should be able to make up a cable to whatever length you want as long as you don't mind the standard colour of grey.

If you buy a cable of ebay make sure you get a cat 5e cable and not the slightly cheaper but much lower quality cat 5.

    Or Cat 6 cable

My setup involves a 25 meter ethernet cable run upstairs, and have never had any issues at all.

I think Ethernet can run up to 100metres.
