Petrol has risen a lot; about 85p in January and now about £1.01 or so

Food also is more expensive (weaker sterling, higher transport costs etc) in our assessment of the groceries.

Our heating remains off but we're in East Anglia so not "north"; don't expect to put heating on until October...

Laughing at you being in East Anglia Stuart, I'm further South than you in North London.

We still have the bedroom window open all night; what's wrong with your part of London chirpchirp? :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Clearly this will be another excuse that I hear for why our heating is almost never off - Cheshire being closer to the antarctic !

Puts on pedant's hat.... no, definitely further from the antarctic, but closer to the arctic than me :rotfl:

    Sorry RT, just having fun!

Actually, we have the windows open in the bedroom for about 11months in the year. Living in a small community we do have good air quality and little noise at night. OH does complain when it is -3°C outside though for some reason....

I just feel the cold Stuart! I let it drop to 17.9 in the house but used to have it at 22 so that's quite a climate change for me.

I think I have cut the utility bills by 75% but then it is supposed to be summer, will be great to see what the spreadsheets for the utilities look like in a year!

Would be interested to know what temperature everyone else has their thermostats set to before the heating comes on, as I'm really feeling the cold tonight and it's apparently 17.4 centigrade.

No heating on; just two layers on top (well, I do have the bottoms on too IYSWIM :o). Have a nice hot cup of black tea if you feel chilly and put some slippers on.

We try to have thermostat set for 19-20°C in winter but tweak it down to about 17°C in Spring before we turn it off. We do have 75mm double glazing and 10" (250mm) of insulation in the loft (we even got a grant to have that fitted!). However I do feel we should be turning off the heating earlier in the year than we do, and keeping it off longer.

Another thing to note, in winter our study is cosy thanks to the desktop PC heating the little room; you don't notice it until you go elsewhere in the house!

Remember you are as far north as Nova Scotia and Calgary, so even with the Gulf Stream there will be evenings which can be a bit chilly. I hope next year we get a better Spring than the past 3 as I miss sitting out on the decking at dusk/nightfall, beer in hand waiting for our local bats to fly around us hunting insects along out hedgerow and the snuffling hedgehogs looking for food within a couple of feet of where we are sat.
  • mines set at 14 during the summer and 17-18 in the winter. Our flat tends to be a lot warmer than that tho, hovering (in general) between 19-22, electrical equipment is a definite source of heating for me (whoops!).

Keeps bills down and helps with the MFW!

Gosh you all make me feel so bad. I never used to turn the heating off it was always set to keep the house at 21 degrees. Now I've taken it off that and set it to manual but once it gets below 19 degrees I feel really cold even with the extra layer. It's mainly my fingers and nose which feel it! However, it's at 17.4 at the moment and has warmed up from 17.2 which it had dropped to when I finally went to bed.

I really don't know how you can bear to let it get to 14 degrees!
