LCD v Plasma

Hi,
I'm running the age old battle of comparing an LCD and Plasma TV.
In the LCD corner we have the Sony KDL40W5500 in the Plasma corner we have the Panasonic TX-P42G10. Both have recently been reviewed in What HiFi and the Plasma came out better but I was wondering what people experiences had been like with these sets?

I can't say anything about those particular TVs, but the whole plasma vs LCD thing is pretty much a non-issue. Buy whatever TV is best, regardless of what type it is.0

Theyve literally only come out in the last few months ~ how on earth do you expect ANY of us to have experience with either?
Going of what-hifi though ~ SURELY the bleeding backlight issues of the sony are a BIG negative?:idea:0 -
No backlight issues or problems at all with the Sony KDL-52w4000 that I bought last December.
Jet-black blacks and intricate grey-scales, too. It's marvellous.
Wouldn't swap it for a plasma - Pioneer, Panasonic or otherwise.
That's why I bought it.
Check them out with your own eyes and buy the one that you, personally, prefer. It's your money and you're the one who's going to be watching it.
Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:
As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.

There is with the 5500 though. Cutting corners to keep price down id guess:idea:0

aliEnRIK,
I thank and bless you every day for the personal advice you gave me before I bought the 52w4000. In particular, your counsel not to incur the extra expense of a 52w4500 for the sake of 100 Hz. You were absolutely right - I haven't missed 100 Hz at all and 100 Hz comes with problems of its own. You made the correct call and I'm greatly indebted to you.
I do hope you don't think that I dispute what you say about plasmas generally and Pioneers specifically. And that you understand that some people (such as I) just, personally, prefer the image rendered by a Sony LCD.
As with Macs and PCs, I never tell people to get LCDs instead of plasmas - I simply tell them to keep an open mind and discover for themselves, with their own eyes and with proper practical research, what is actually best for them, personally.
I can't speak for the models of Sony later than mine - at that you are far more knowledgeable than I - but I do know that the one you helped me choose for myself is absolutely wonderful.
As I've said many times before in these threads, you are a 5 star :A .
Make that six.
But magazines like What Hi-Fi, revered though they may be, don't always get their facts right; so, what they print should not always be taken as gospel. What Hi-Fi had to completely re-write two reviews (of five-star items, no less) last January after I pointed out to the editor that they contained serious factual errors.

haha
What was that all about then?
Theyve got my back up anyways as theyve banned me from the forum for asking a question

I'll email you privately a copy of the correspondence I had with the editor.
The devices involved were the Sony RDR-HXD890 and the Sony RDR-HXD995. The errors were serious; I almost didn't buy one because of them. Fortunately, though, Richer Sounds (as always) got their description of these items correct and that set me on the right track.
It's worth adding that three salesmen at our local inner-city Curry's (including the manager) made the same error and swore blind that they were right.
Needless to say, I bought one from Richer Sounds - in their Boxing Day sale - to reward them for their diligence (and also because they were charging £40 less than Curry's!).

At any size, the OP should be looking at both and then deciding for himself which of the two he prefers.

I did try to look at both in John Lewis at lunchtime today. However they both looked the same to me and as there was no blu ray connected i couldn't see the difference via that. I went to the Sony Centre and the guy there was telling me Plasma's on its way out and LCD would definately be the better option. I don't want to go huge on the TV i do get so I might just opt for the Sony0
