None of your conjectures are exciting enough (I prefer flesh to plastic, Avoriaz ).

I was rather hoping my mystery object would turn out to be a transmat device (transfer of matter) that I could use to transport myself instantly to any planet anywhere within, at least, our local cluster of galaxies - a sort of "beam me up Scotty" mechanism that can be operated from the comfort of my home and over very large distances. How disappointing to find it is a measly microphone, fit only for me to shriek into it my utter contempt for such low-tech.

I have alerted the relevant authorities and evacuated the building. After a breif meeting we came to the conclusion that it isnt doing any harm just sitting there, so we are going to leave it for the weekend and see what tuesday brings. if all else fails we can drop it into the keg of Liquid Nitrogen we have here.

thats just a standard microphone for a pc or laptop would have come boxed in with a new unit.
