What on earth is this?

While clearing out boxes and drawers today, I came upon this strange item, still in its clear plastic bag, but for the life of me I have no idea what it is. Can someone enlighten me? It's a bit smaller than it comes out on the picture.

Looks like a microphone to me, does it clip onto something? A collar perhaps?

The icon on the plug indicates it's at least part of a microphone.

I have no idea what it could have come with. I guess I'll have to check all my stuff. Hang on, I have a Sony digital dictaphone for my work - I wonder if it came with that.

All I have of those are laptops. No sound card and no other drive. Just as well I like mysteries.

Maybe it did come with a PC, perhaps as a cheap standby to use with webcam or voice over internet programs such as Skype. If you use stuff like that you've presumably got a nicer headset by now

No I don't use any of that, redux. Nothing came with any of my laptops. No worries at least I know it's not a major component or something lol.
