Sorry to be back again so soon, but our Pc has decided to dial up our internet connection as soon as it is switched on whether or not we want it to. There's also no icon for us to use to switch off the connection so the only way to disconnect is to switch off the machine - an endless circle! Not ideal when we just want to type up a letter and our phone line is tied up regardless!
Any help appreciated - have tried google groups search but got confused and don't want to lose our connection altogether.
Thanks

Open up Internet Explorer, Go to Tools, Internet Options, Connections, And tick Never Dial a Connection, Okay
To show icon on desktop, again go to Connections, Settings, Properities, General and then tick Show Icon in notification area.
Hope this helps0 -

I am guessing you have broadband?? my PC does the same (its not a problem for us) but I think it depends on the modem you are using. My modem is always connected to the adsl line when switched on and the computer connects to the modem. I dont need to set up a connection when installing windows for instance as all the details are stored in the modem.
Sorry I dont have a cure for you, just wanted you to know that its not an isolated case.
If you are on dial up then I guess thats a different matter.'If it's not broken, keep fixing it until it is'.0 -

First port of call: Run a complete virus check of your machine! There is a pinned thread on here about free online virus scans etc. Once you have made sure that it's not a virus causing this slow down of your system and it has only recently happened then we need to look at what processes are running in your task manager and so on, but first step is to check thoroughly for viruses

I know I am a sad IT geek but I save my data regularly onto other media (DVDs and an external hard drive) then at least once a year I do a complete rebuild of my machine and take the oppertunerty to replace any parts I think are due to be replaced (hard drive, any cables I think are looking a bit iffy because I originally raided them from somewhere else) and I flash my BIOS too and make sure I have the latest drivers for all the bits and pieces (graphic card, sound card, wireless adapter and so on).DFW Nerd #025DFW no more!
