its very easy to dowel a cake. you can buy these in M&S too. ou can use 3 or 4. just stick them in thru your bottom tier equally apart directly below where you would place your top tier. Then carefully mark each dowel level with the top of the cake. remove the dowels and cut off at these points. when putting them back in the cake the dowels should now be level with the cake and so will support your top tier. you will need to purchase a board the same size as the top cake(so you won't be able to see it when its resting on the top)( a thin board works best) then just rest in place. you can either pipe around the join or place ribbon around the base of each cake. which is nice and simple.

It may be hard getting it off the board. a strong palatte knife may be required and a little patience. if you make any indents simply place a little decoration over it with sugar glue.

Thank you for that! That's a big help! Could I do it with 3 tiers?

LOUISE- I asked how much notice to give on ordering cakes instore and the minimum time is three weeks maximum 3 months. They can not guarantee they will have enough stock if you order less than 3 weeks before needed. This is also quoted in the food to go catalogue.

I was also advised with the fruit cakes to leave them out of the boxes for at least 24hours prior to decorating and slicing to allow the icing to harden.

Thanks for that note - I had another look at their site. Seems the sponge is 7 days but the fruit cake is 21 days for order - so I will just order them both at the end of April.:j

Hmmm - going to have to see about hiring a cake stand now. There's a local shop near me does them, think it's £10 for 2 days hire, so it won't break the bank

My venue provides a cake stand, they order them from a local party supply place (just in case you haven't checked) , wont cost me anything.
Think I'm going with the 3 tier sponge cake then stick a few of these sugarcraft butterflies on
