I think it is only the white fruit iced that they have in store, it comes to 93.00 for the XL, L, and M, but on-line I have ordered XL Fruit, L & M sponge in Ivory for 92.00.

Also does anyone know how long the sell by dates on the sponge ones would be as I have chosen delivery for the next Sat but wedding not until following Friday.

If they do them in sponge off the shelf can you let me know as well.

    cheers me dears.
On the M&S website it says All-butter sponge filled with buttercream and raspberry jam and covered in soft icing. Sponge cakes can be eaten up to 5 days after collection & Fruit cake : Vine fruits, nuts and cherries laced with brandy. Fruitcakes can be eaten up to 14 days after collection
Probably not what you want to hear but I would think they should still be lovely by Friday.
We are thinking of getting the M&S cakes too can I ask how you are decorating it, just trying to get ideas.

I'm thinking about having a crystal cake topper and sprinkling some crystals or edible glitter inmy colour scheme on the bottom and middle tiers. Might put some ribbons round them in my colour scheme as well.

I'm thinking of getting the medium and large cakes and resting the medium directly onto the large (can you do this?? - expert advice welcome here!)

Saw a nice cake in a magazine that had a chiffon ribbon around the top cake with a diamante brooch. On the top of the cake, there was a single butterfly in a bright colour. Thought that would be simple enough to do.

I'd like to know this as well! Just wondered how you would get it off the cake board though??? Knowing my luck I'd break the damn thing! :rotfl:

Well I am definitely going to order my M&S cake online - not trusting the store

I went in today to check the dates on their current cakes and all they had on the shelf was one XL and one S fruit cakes (use by 7th May) no sponge ones at all.

Gonna get mine ordered for the monday before the wedding (get married on the wed) so it will still be nice and fresh.

its very easy to dowel a cake. you can buy these in M&S too. ou can use 3 or 4. just stick them in thru your bottom tier equally apart directly below where you would place your top tier. Then carefully mark each dowel level with the top of the cake. remove the dowels and cut off at these points. when putting them back in the cake the dowels should now be level with the cake and so will support your top tier. you will need to purchase a board the same size as the top cake(so you won't be able to see it when its resting on the top)( a thin board works best) then just rest in place. you can either pipe around the join or place ribbon around the base of each cake. which is nice and simple.

It may be hard getting it off the board. a strong palatte knife may be required and a little patience. if you make any indents simply place a little decoration over it with sugar glue.

    Thanks:j

I am going for sponge on the bottom and fruit on the top (just 2 tiers). Mainly because sponge is the firm favourite in my family (fruit cake will only be eaten byt the dads and grandads, the kids would turn their noses up lol)

So I am going to order online the week before the wedding (takes 7 days)and collect it instore on the monday (wedding is on the wed)

I have got a cake separator for between the two tiers, so I don'd need to worry about dowels and things.

*'So I am going to order online the week before the wedding (takes 7 days)and collect it instore on the monday (wedding is on the wed)'*

LOUISE- I asked how much notice to give on ordering cakes instore and the minimum time is three weeks maximum 3 months. They can not guarantee they will have enough stock if you order less than 3 weeks before needed. This is also quoted in the food to go catalogue.

I was also advised with the fruit cakes to leave them out of the boxes for at least 24hours prior to decorating and slicing to allow the icing to harden.

The fruit cake will flatten the sponge cakes if you are placing each one on top of another with out using a tiered stand. If you do not want to purchase a stand many venues or cake shops can hire you one. I just purchased mine from Ebay for £36.00 inc delivery. I did not want to bid on one of those pre owned as i will continue to use it over the years for my home made xmas cakes - i have to make one for myself and then smaller ones for family members. HTH.
