Switching calls from Sky to BT

I have my line with BT and sky talk for free in a package with Sky Tv, Broadband, ive had this package for nearly 2 years.

I had a call from BT yesterday asking me to switch my calls from Sky to BT and they will reduce my new line rental charge from 12.75 i think to 11.25.

Its free evening and weekend call plan, he said i get free caller display if i make 2 phone calls a month(can be free calls), also voicemail and free evening and weekend calls to 0845 numbers etc

He said im free to leave Sky Talk as im past my contract and he will arrange it all with them.

I ended up agreeing to it, but what i wanted to know is if Sky will try and bill me anything, can i just leave for free, they wont alter the charge of my package will they? i know Sky Talk is free in the package but i know some companys can get one over you.

Also is there any catches with this BT package?, the guy went through all the small print but thought i would check

Many Thanks

Your Sky broadband will now cost you £5 more each month because you no longer use their Sky Talk telephone package - see HERE.

The upside is (within package) free 0845/0870 calls - and avoiding Sky's excessive prices for those calls.

Update 3-8-09, Sky now includes 0870 calls in its Sky Talk call packages.

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Thanks for your quick reply - I had a feeling there would be a catch, I hardly call 0845 numbers, and when i need to, i ring them from work, which is rare.
So basically after the line rental reduction i will be paying 3.50 a month more, hardly seems worth it, im going to call BT and cancel it as they said i have a 13 day period to do so.
Wish me luck, I'll probably be on hold for a hour trying to sort this now :(
  • Why don't you switch your line rental to sky too? Its only £10 a month including VAT, all your bills under one roof and you don't have to deal with rubbish BT customer services.

To do this you would now have to sign a 12 month minimum contract, possibly pay for peak calls to customer service, be subject to their expensive 0845/0870 call charges and leave yourself wide open to Sky imposing whatever call charges it likes and barring access to cheap call providers like 18185 etc etc

Also what about if you need/want to cancel your Sky TV subscription?
  • The 12 month minimum contract is only if you get the half price line rental for 6 months offer, otherwise there is no contract on the line rental.
You do have to subscribe to sky tv to get the call package and line rental but as there is no contract on the line rental you will only be restricted by the tv contract.

No mention that its just restricted to half price rental customers.

"Sky Talk: [From 08.04.09] 12 month minimum term applies to New Sky Talk customers and to existing customers taking up Sky Talk Line Rental"

    http://packages.sky.com/speak/

    They also say here:

"Minimum term applies to Sky Talk, including line rental."

    http://www.sky.com/portal/site/skycom/skyproducts/skytalk/linerental

So it appears that even customers just moving their calls to Sky are subject to a 12 month contract.

You would say that because you work for Sky according to a fairly recent post. :D

One of the golden rules of selling is " dont knock the competition ".;)

By the way your suppose to declare your interest when posting the forum rules say.

"Forum users are asked to make it clear if discussing a topic they have professional knowledge of that they work in that field (but do not tout for business). "
  • I don't work for Sky, I work for Teletech who contracts us out to Sky. And I've been made redundant, so I owe Sky nothing :) Also we get no commission so it doesnt benefit me whatsoever if people buy from Sky.

Sorry to hear that, but you do have a professional knowledge of the subject.
  • I don't actually have professional knowledge of the subject as I'm not in the Talk department so I don't sell that at all. I was a Sky customer before working for TT for broadband and Talk so thats how I know about the package. I have re read the t&cs and it does seem that new customers after 8th april will be entered in to a 12 month contract, but before the 8th that wasn't the case.
