which supermarket does the best basic brands

Another vote here for Sainsbury's basics.

As well as their teas being fairtrade their bananas are also faritrade and it now looks like all their pork products are British pork and these are all in the basics range.

I have a basket being put together at the moment in "mysupermarket" and in Sainsbugs it is £45, Tesco £53, and Asda £55.

I know alot depends on what you are actually purchasing and whether ort not certain items are on a special offer at the time.

I have to agree with (almost) everyone else here that Sainsburys is, IMO, by far the best Basics range - there is loads to choose from and with very few exceptions, the quality and taste have been great. I love the basics instant mash and use it for all kinds of things - I'm not keen on it just as mashed potato (although its okay) but I put a little bit of the dry flakes into my mashed carrot and swede and it stops that watery consistency you sometimes get. I also use it to make very quick leek and potato soup, or just to thicken other soups. I also like the basics beans, tomatoes, jaffa cakes, creme caramel, barn eggs, madeira cake (it's fab!), cheddar, camembert and brie cheese, orange juice and lots of other things which I can't remember ATM.

Maybe the information on mysupermarket is out of date, but quite a lot of the Sainsbury's (and other supermarkets) basics/value items have hydrogenated vegetable oil in them while the main non-value versions do not.

Granted, this applies to prepared items, however it is one thing to watch out for if you are considering switching to value items.

There are simply too many people on here (I'm assuming from all over the country) saying the same thing for it to be explained away like that IMO, but who knows? AFAICT Tesco and Asda don't do value items like Avodados, kiwi fruit, mangos, pitted olives, cheese selections, grated cheese or even salmon fillets etc? Unless, like you say, these just aren't available in the Tesco and Asda that supply me (hard to believe as the Tesco is an Extra and the Asda is a Mega-store but who knows?) Anyone know for sure which supermarket has the biggest range of value/basics items?

But they do.
They don't put them in their cheap range but they're still very cheap.

hi rhi, parties are tempting, depends if i can find a night me and prospective lodger are both off work

I am quite biased towards Sainsburys, I never rated Tesco or Asda own brands anyway, after recently trying to save and generally cut back I have started to use Sainsbo's basic and I am really happy with the quality, it has saved me heaps, the quality is fine and I am really really fussy, although the snob inside me does decant the 10p shower gel in to nicer pot! I have sensitive skin but this is perfectly fine for me and wouldn't bother to buy the expensive stuff again - most of it goes down the plug hole anyway!

LOL. The 10p shower gel is remarkably similar to the hand wash...but much cheaper. Maybe your post has given me an idea - I may decant the shower gel into the handwash bottle and see if anyone notices, lol....

I was going to post thread about which supermarket has the best online shopping, Tesco or Sainsburys, I always use Tesco, but after reading all these posts am going to give Sainsburys a go. I don't do Asda, apart from their fish counter which is good, and perhaps the odd item of clothing. I would be tempted if Waitrose did it. :T
